Vita di Gabriel García Márquez
Gerald Martin ci offre in questa appassionata biografia un grande ritratto ricco di dettagli del maestro del "realismo magico". La narrazione inizia al "tempo del colera", quando Aracataca non era ancora Macondo e un bambino muoveva i suoi primi passi fra bauli che rigurgitano libri, indigeni dai mille segreti e donne vestite di una mussolina così leggera che le iguane vi restano impigliate nel deporre le uova. Martin ci racconta le tante "male ore" e il terrore del buio, l'odore di mandorle amare e le burrasche di "foglie morte", illuminando e precisando ciascuna delle molte facce di Gabo. A questa storia della vita e delle opere di Márquez l'autore ha lavorato per diciassette anni con una passione narrativa che sorprende a ogni passo il lettore per la vivezza, lo humour, il calore e il colore della scrittura. Il risultato è un'opera straordinaria per ricchezza e qualità delle informazioni, una biografia che Gabo sulle prime ha solo "tollerato" («Perché mai scrivere una biografia?
