Throughout the nineteenth century, social expressions and dynamics have been reflected in the surge of various printed products. The contributors analyze a diverse range of sources, such as caricatures, journalistic reports, travelogues, scholarly volumes, social novels, and fairytale collections, viewing them as early manifestations of social knowledge and ethnographic representation situated at the confluence of ›popular‹ and ›scientific‹ publishing. Their comprehensive exploration unveils alternative contexts and dimensions of early ethnographic knowledge production, providing insights into a history of social knowledge that surpasses disciplinary, national, and genre-related boundaries.

African Immigrant Religions in America focuses on new understandings and insights concerning the presence and relevance of African immigrant religious communities in the United States. The issue of patronage-clientelism has long been of interest in the social sciences. Based on long-term ethnographic research in southern Italy, this book examines the concept and practice of raccomandazione: the omnipresent social institution of using connections to get things done. Viewing the practice both from an indigenous perspective – as a morally ambivalent social fact – and considering it in light of the power relations that position southern Italy within the nesting relations of global Norths and Souths, it builds on and extends past scholarship to consider the nature of patronage in a contemporary society and its relationship to corruption.

Lockdown still represents an unprecedented experience for all of those who went through it since it radically affected our freedom of movement and social interaction, that used to make up our everyday lives. Some people believe that once the pandemic ends, nothing will be the same. Others think that once the virus becomes weaker or a vaccine is at our disposal and the fear is diminished, everything will go back to normal because the mechanism of habit is in many ways similar to the mechanisms of nature, reiterating the uniformity of its functioning.
