When I first began to plan this book, I thought that I would begin the preface with the words ―the purpose of this book is.‖ I am glad to present this book, especially designed to serve the needs of the students. There are so many listeners of Gangubai Hangal who knows her as a renowned classical vocalist but through this work, I tried to show Gangubai Hangal as a role model of humanity whether it is as a daughter, mother, grandmother, or friend. No one walks alone in the quest of attaining knowledge and I am no exception, I must start by thanking all those who joined me in my journey, those who walked beside me, those helped me along the way by continuously urging me to write this thesis and to put my thoughts down. My thanks to all the people who I have met and worked with and shared my insights and problems. This Book and its pages are thanks to all my near ones who have helped me shape it. Sometimes words get limited when it comes to express deep and hearty regards for an inspirational experience of life. I feel myself lucky to come near the milestone which I desperately wanted and finalizing this research is one of those rare beautiful moments of my life.

Pesticide Removal by Combined Ozonation and Granular Activated Carbon Filtration
This research aimed to identify and understand mechanisms thar underlie the beneficial effect of ozonation on removal of pesticides and other micropollutants by Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filtration. This allows optimization of the combination of these two processes, termed Biological Activated Carbon filtration. The study concluded that ozonation significantly improves removal of atrazine by GAC filtration not only due to the wellknown effect of oxidation of atrazine, but also due to the effect of partical oxidation of Background Organic Matter (BOM) present in water. Ozone-induced oxidation of BOM was found to improve adsorption of atrazine in GAC filters. Biodegradation of atrazine in these filters wasnot demonstrated. Higher GAC's adsorption capacity for atrazine and faster atrazine's mass transfer in filters with ozonated rather than non-ozonated influent were explained as due to ozonated BOM. Both can be attributed to enhanced biodegradability and reduced adsorbsbility of partially ozidated BOM compounds, resulting in their increased biodegradation and decreased adsorption in GAC filters.

I have planned and designed this representative Anthology of Kannada short Stories in English (Fifteen stories).My main objective is to offer the best short stories in English. The seeds of Kannada short story as a literary form can be traced back to Katha Sarasttisagara, Panchantantra, Jataka tales and great oral folk legends and wonderful tales. Some of the oral and written stories were carried to the West mostly by traders, wanderers, monks and cultural ambassadors. They also carried with them the two greatest epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, Vedas and Upanishads. The travellers brought back the great stories/epics of the West like Illiad, Odyssey and Biblical stories. With the invention of printing press in Germany in 16th century it became possible to reach out to countries far and wide through the medium of print. The short story as a genre developed steadily over the centuries and it lost its amorphous body and acquired a well defined order, arrangement and form.
