Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy was born on 28 August 1828 after the Decembrist revolt into a long line of Russian nobility. He was the fourth child of Countess Maria Volkonsky and Count Nicolay Ilyich Tolstoy (1797-1837) a Lieutenant Colonel who was awarded the order of St. Vladimir for his service. The story of his life and literary contributions are closely related to the historical, political, social and cultural developments these years. He is regarded as a major thinker, and religious, social and political reformer.
