A Renaissance Architecture of Power
The growth of princely states in early Renaissance Italy brought a thorough renewal to the old seats of power. One of the most conspicuous outcomes of this process was the building or rebuilding of new court palaces, erected as prestigious residences in accord with the new ‘classical’ principles of Renaissance architecture. The novelties, however, went far beyond architectural forms: they involved the reorganisation of courtly interiors and their functions, new uses for the buildings, and the relationship between the palaces and their surroundings. The whole urban setting was affected by these processes, and therefore the social, residential and political customs of its inhabitants. This is the focus of A Renaissance Architecture of Power, which aims to analyse from a comparative perspective the evolution of Italian court palaces in the Renaissance in their entirety. Scholars did not consider it necessary to grant Spain the honour of being the creative country of the game of draughts and of the new modality in the chess game with the new dama. Both the alquerque-3 as the alquerque-9 games were known in Roman times. Completely different is the situation for the alquerque-12 game. It is said that the alquerque has its origin in Egypt. Perhaps this is the case for the alquerque-3 and alquerque-9 games, but never for alquerque-12 game. Some authors claim that the alquerque-12 game is a Greek or Roman game, but the great expert of these games, Dr. Ulrich Schadler, discards it. This book is the first proof that the alquerque-12 game was not popular at all in France, but much more in Spain, where the new chess game and draughts game were invented.

Lluís Domènech i Montaner, un dels grans referents del moviment modernista i del catalanisme polític al tombant del segle XX, va desenvolupar una intensa tasca de recerca del patrimoni artístic. A fi de documentar-se sobre les arrels de l’arquitectura catalana, des del 1900 fins al 1906 va fer nombroses expedicions científiques pels racons més amagats del país, que havien de culminar amb la redacció de la primera història de l’art romànic a Catalunya. Malauradament, per raons polítiques, professionals i personals, l’obra va quedar inconclusa. Aquest quadern revisita, a tall de pelegrinatge artístic, alguns dels indrets més emblemàtics que l’arquitecte va recórrer en les seves campanyes pel Pirineu i recull també la transcripció d’una part de la seva introducció històrica sobre el romànic, un text —fragmentari i inacabat, però també programàtic— que, juntament amb centenars de fitxes, dibuixos, plànols i fotografies dels monuments estudiats, ha perviscut com un vestigi del llibre que no va arribar a escriure.
