Poetry. In her highly anticipated debut collection, FORT NOT, Emily Skillings creates an "atmosphere for encounter," akin to searching for meaning through lip-reading. We soon realize that these poems are speaking to us in tones that appear elegantly improvisational. And while the poems may "shout from the periphery," it is not without reason, but because of their desire to direct the reader to a created space--a world that allows for "curved logic," "that dirty, off-gold color," "middle-class nausea," and "metallic power" to coexist. The mysteries here embrace a natural, physical music, pulling us into a moving current of painted images, poetic histories, and draped bodies evaporating to re...

Parallel Movement of the Hands

A stunning collection of work from beloved poet John Ashbery, his first posthumous book Renowned for his inventive mind, ambitious play with language, and dexterity with a wide range of tones and styles, John Ashbery has been a major artistic figure in the cultural life of our time. Records of an Incitement to Silence

Longlisted for the Polari Book Prize 2022 Gregory Woods is the leading British critic and historian of gay literature. He has published five previous Carcanet poetry collections, the first being We Have The Melon (1992). Ten years in the making, Records of an Incitement to Silence revisits many of the original themes, but here Woods brings them closer to the endgame. The sequence of stripped-down, unrhymed sonnets, and the longer poems that accentuate it, suggest a missing narrative: the growth of the individual in a world of upheaval, the search for and loss of love, the formation of memories, the limits of what can truthfully be said, the traces we leave and the chance of their survival. 'One of my creative habits,' Woods writes, 'is the wringing-out of a single form until it's bone dry: the unrhymed sonnets; the monosyllabic syllabics of the long poem 'Hat Reef Loud'; the incompatible yoking-together of iambic pentameter and dactylic trimeter in the long poem 'No Title Yet'.' His formal stringency intensifies the poems' emotional and erotic charge, their celebration and their plaint.

Thinking with Trees

Shortlisted for the Michael Murphy Memorial Prize 2023 Winner of the Poetry Category OCM Bocas Prize for Caribbean Literature 2022 An Irish Times Best Poetry Books of 2021 A White Review Book of the Year 2021 Jason Allen-Paisant grew up in a village in central Jamaica. 'Trees were all around,' he writes, 'we often went to the yam ground, my grandmother's cultivation plot. When I think of my childhood, I see myself entering a deep woodland with cedars and logwood all around. [...] The muscular guango trees were like beings among whom we lived.' Now he lives in Leeds, near a forest where he goes walking. 'Here, trees represent an alternative space, a refuge from an ultra-consumerist culture......

Poetry. In her first collection of poetry, Emily Hunt inverts the ordinary: How to bring a new figure close / was like taking a globe, turning it once / and placing it back on its pedestal. Using spare diction and imagery, Hunt imagines a new world "so close to what the world is like" that the reader might feel like a humble visitor to our planet Earth. Though often elegiac, DARK GREEN is alive, inviting its readers to deeply sense this poet's tender and singular investigations. "With incantatory wit, Emily Hunt writes poems that could be stories, or stories that might be poems. DARK GREEN starts with a farewell, but grows in power, depth and range from page to page; like snowflakes or violi...

A Lit Hub Most Anticipated Book of 2021 An NPR Best Book of 2021 An Electric Literature Best Poetry Book of 2021 A Dennis Cooper Best Book of 2021 Hoarders is a tender and unusual exploration of place, loneliness, grief, and desire in late capitalist America. What is the true nature of the relationship between people and objects? Kate Durbin’s Hoarders is a quest into this question, vividly capturing the sticky attachments between people and their stuff. To create the book, Durbin took detailed notes while watching the reality TV show of the same name, one she had resisted watching for years because of her family’s history of hoarding. She then began whittling, re-arranging, researching,...

In the Same Light

Shortlisted for the Lucien Stryk Asian Translation Prize 2023 Shortlisted for the National Translation Award in Poetry 2023 by the American Literary Translators Association The Poetry Book Society Spring 2022 Translation Choice Chinese poetry is unique in world literature in that it was written for the best part of 3,000 years by exiles, and Chinese history can be read as a matter of course in the words of poets. In this collection from the Tang Dynasty are poems of war and peace, flight and refuge but above all they are plain-spoken, everyday poems; classics that are everyday timeless, a poetry conceived "to teach the least and the most, the literacy of the heart in a barbarous world," says...

Poetry. Translated by Austin Carder. Featuring an introduction by Adonis. The first book-length translation of works by this important Egyptian-born, Lebanese-French poet, POETRIES presents the core of Georges Schehadè's (1905-1989) úuvre. Though best known as a dramatist, Schehadè was first and foremost a poet. His lifework was the seven volumes of crystalline poems published over a span of nearly a half-century (1938-1985), each successive volume simply and enigmatically titled POETRIES. It is from these seven books that our selection has been drawn. In 1986, the Acadèmie Francaise awarded Georges Schehadè the inaugural Grand Prix de la Francophonie. Despite having received wide admir...

Poetry. "A masque: it's all a mask, celebrating the 'organic'...British nature (transplants to US), in layers of spring and subsequent decay, within a long cultural history and a (to middle age) lifespan, personal pain, modernization, human war, gods and goddesses speaking anywhere. The poem has an enormous and muscular musicality (including prose musicality); the Poet constantly wondering how to Bee, how a Fool can Bee (symbol of all good qualities, sunniness, industry, royalty and divinity, various Saints)...A stunning, pleasurable book."--Alice Notley "Martin Corless-Smith is a gifted and brilliant poet. His work is filled with poesy and all that can mean for the depth of the art. The mind is vertical as it moves through the master box of diction and form. Here is a generous voice with wild lyric runs and gorgeous music throughout--we are only made richer by this tender work. THE FOOL AND THE BEE is a fabulous book of the poetic imagination."--Peter Gizzi
