This volume presents the proceedings of the joint conference of the European Medical and Biological Engineering Conference (EMBEC) and the Nordic-Baltic Conference on Biomedical Engineering and Medical Physics (NBC), held in Tampere, Finland, in June 2017. The proceedings present all traditional biomedical engineering areas, but also highlight new emerging fields, such as tissue engineering, bioinformatics, biosensing, neurotechnology, additive manufacturing technologies for medicine and biology, and bioimaging, to name a few. Moreover, it emphasizes the role of education, translational research, and commercialization.

Over the past three decades, the exploding number of new technologies and applications introduced in medical practice, often powered by advances in biosignal processing and biomedical imaging, created an amazing account of new possibilities for diagnosis and therapy, but also raised major questions of appropriateness and safety. The accelerated development in this field, alongside with the promotion of electronic health care solutions, is often on the basis of an uncontrolled diffusion and use of medical technology. The emergence and use of medical devices is multiplied rapidly and today there exist more than one million different products available on the world market. Despite the fact that the rising cost of health care, partly resulting from the new emerging technological applications, forms the most serious and urgent problem for many governments today, another important concern is that of patient safety and user protection, issues that should never be compromised and expelled from the Biomedical Engineering research practice agenda.
Cuidado a la dependencia e inmigración: informe de resultados
El proceso de envejecimiento acelerado que se está efectuando en la población española, tiene efectos sobre la estructura social y económica. Una de estas consecuencias tiene su reflejo en un incremento de la dependencia en las personas mayores. Este estudio investiga al colectivo de trabajadores inmigrantes cuidadores de personas mayores en hogares españoles.
Envejecimiento, sociedad y salud
En una sociedad que sólo se preocupa en definitiva del individuo en la medida en que produce o tiene capacidad para producir, hasta no hace mucho tiempo los hombres y mujeres de la tercera edad quedaban, en parte, excluidos del resto de la sociedad. En este sentido, la imagen que tenemos de la vejez no es un concepto inocente, ni fortuito, sino un elemento clave del tratamiento que las personas y la propia sociedad dan a los ancianos, de las políticas diseñadas para la tercera edad y lo que es más importante, del comportamiento y de las expectativas que los ancianos proyectan para sí mismos. Pero en los últimos años los cambios se han venido produciendo de forma constante. Los avances en el campo de la salud y los cambios producidos en las estructuras sociales han hecho que este colectivo haya aumentado significativamente su presencia y su implicación en la sociedad. Este libro responde a la reflexión y al esfuerzo de distintos profesores universitarios, especialistas y profesionales vinculados al tema del envejecimiento analizado desde múltiples facetas, con el convencimiento de que la tercera edad no es en absoluto una edad de tercera.
