Templum Amicitiae
Jewish and Christian perceptions of the Second Temple in Jerusalem are explored here in twenty essays. The main subjects are Jewish public opinion before and after Herod's new building, the temple in Christian origins and the New Testament, and views of the Jewish cultus in the early church. Foci of discussion include the temple in connection with kingship and messianism, positive and negative attitudes to the temple, and Jewish and Christian use of temple imagery. The book was presented by pupils, friends and colleagues to Ernst Bammel, Reader in Jewish and Early Christian Studies in the University of Cambridge. His rich bibliography (1945-91) is printed in conclusion.
Jesus and the Politics of His Day
Whether or not Jesus was involved with the Zealot movement of armed resistance to Rome is the provocative question this collection attempts to answer. Twenty-six articles concentrate on four areas: methodology, the historical situation, New Testament exegesis, and the trials of Jesus before the Sanhedrin and Pilate.
Jesus the Prophet
R. David Kaylor believes that Jesus' vision of a just society and his prophetic engagement with social, political, and economic conditions led to his execution by the Romans. Here, he presents Jesus' message of a just society based on Israel's covenant tradition. He shows the prophetic background and social content of Jesus' ethical teaching and demonstrates that the parables (especially those with economic and agricultural associations) critiqued the social conditions and called for a restructuring of community life. He provides evidence that Jesus' vision remains, offering criticism of the present and promise of a future.
The Historical Jesus of the Gospels
The earliest substantive sources available for historical Jesus research are in the Gospels themselves; when interpreted in their early Jewish setting, their picture of Jesus is more coherent and plausible than are the competing theories offered by many modern scholars. So argues Craig Keener in The Historical Jesus of the Gospels. In exploring the depth and riches of the material found in the Synoptic Gospels, Keener shows how many works on the historical Jesus emphasize just one aspect of the Jesus tradition against others, but a much wider range of material in the Jesus tradition makes sense in an ancient Jewish setting. Keener masterfully uses a broad range of evidence from the early Jesus traditions and early Judaism to reconstruct a fuller portrait of the Jesus who lived in history.
