Nach 1945 vollzog sich innerhalb der westdeutschen Arbeiterbewegung eine ideelle Neuorientierung, die im größeren Zusammenhang der Westintegration der Bundesrepublik in den 1950er und 1960er Jahren zu sehen ist. SPD und DGB nahmen westlich-liberale Politikkonzepte auf und verbanden sie mit eigenen Traditionen. Die Mechanismen, Protagonisten und Motive dieses Wandels werden dargestellt, wobei die Beziehungen zur amerikanischen Gewerkschaftsbewegung im Vordergrund stehen. Ausgehend von den Unterschieden im politischen Denken der deutschen und der amerikanischen Organisationen wird deren Zusammenarbeit von Mitte der 1940er bis Mitte der 1960er Jahre verfolgt. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, wie westliche Vorstellungen von einer Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftsordnung verbreitet wurden.
