Yuri Vella’s Fight for Survival in Western Siberia
The book is centred on a fascinating personality, a Western Siberian indigenous poet, reindeer herder and ecological activist, who, in his 40s, made the choice to live in the forest with reindeer. There, he struggled with oil giant LUKoil to ensure his reindeer the possibility to live. A series of essays reflect on his awareness and construction of self and culture, his complex relations with the oil industry, and his native spirituality. It presents insights into what it means to be an indigenous intellectual in post-Soviet Russia at the beginning of the 21st century. Yuri Vella (1948-2013) is not an ordinary representative of his people, but he shows one of the possible forms indigenous leadership could take in Russia, if it aims at giving indigenous peoples the possibility in the near and far future to shape a sustainable relation to nature and their neighbours.
Multilingualism and Multiculturalism in Finno-Ugric Literatures 2
The present volume consists of articles dealing with a broad range of multilingual practices in Finno-Ugric literatures, in a variety of sociopolitical contexts from Central Europe to Western Siberia. Literature can strengthen the voices of minority communities, enhance the prestige of languages and encourage their creative use. Today's Finno-Ugric literatures give valuable insights into the everyday realities of multilingualism and cultural diversity, showing the performativity of cultures in multicultural and transcultural settings. Johanna Laakso is Professor of Finno-Ugric languages at the University of Vienna. Her research interests include historical linguistics, gender linguistics and various aspects of language contact.

Sustaining Indigenous Knowledge
The contributions to this volume present ways in which indigenous knowledge in minority communities is sustained and how attempts are made to safeguard endangered languages. Two recent seminars at the Foundation for Siberian Cultures were devoted to the discussion of community-based pedagogical initiatives in Siberia, with comparative examples from other parts of the world. In this volume, scholars with backgrounds in anthropology, linguistics and in the use of new media share their experiences of how to design adequate learning tools in collaboration with their native colleagues. In their articles they discuss previous shortcomings and limitations, with the aim of exploring future directions for maintaining cultural diversities, not only in Siberia, but also among many other peoples of the world.
