Mathematical Modeling and Computational Predictions in Oncoimmunology

Cancer is a complex adaptive dynamic system that causes both local and systemic failures in the patient. Cancer is caused by a number of gain-of-function and loss-of-function events, that lead to cells proliferating without control by the host organism over time. In cancer, the immune system modulates cancer cell population heterogeneity and plays a crucial role in disease outcomes. The immune system itself also generates multiple clones of different cell types, with some clones proliferating quickly and maturing into effector cells. By creating regulatory signals and their networks, and generating effector cells and molecules, the immune system recognizes and kills abnormal cells. Anti-cancer immune mechanisms are realized as multi-layer, nonlinear cellular and molecular interactions. A number of factors determine the outcome of immune system-tumor interactions, including cancer-associated antigens, immune cells, and host organisms.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed conference proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computational Methods in Systems Biology, CMSB 2012, held in London, UK, during October 3-5, 2012. The 17 revised full papers and 8 flash posters presented together with the summaries of 3 invited papers were carefully reviewed and selected from 62 submissions. The papers cover the analysis of biological systems, networks, and data ranging from intercellular to multiscale. Topics included high-performance computing, and for the first time papers on synthetic biology.

Logical Modeling of Biological Systems

Systems Biology is the systematic study of the interactions between the components of a biological system and studies how these interactions give rise to the function and behavior of the living system. Through this, a life process is to be understood as a whole system rather than the collection of the parts considered separately. Systems Biology is therefore more than just an emerging field: it represents a new way of thinking about biology with a dramatic impact on the way that research is performed. The logical approach provides an intuitive method to provide explanations based on an expressive relational language. This book covers various aspects of logical modeling of biological systems,...

Machine learning (ML) is the fastest growing field in computer science, and Health Informatics (HI) is amongst the greatest application challenges, providing future benefits in improved medical diagnoses, disease analyses, and pharmaceutical development. However, successful ML for HI needs a concerted effort, fostering integrative research between experts ranging from diverse disciplines from data science to visualization. Tackling complex challenges needs both disciplinary excellence and cross-disciplinary networking without any boundaries. Following the HCI-KDD approach, in combining the best of two worlds, it is aimed to support human intelligence with machine intelligence. This state-of-the-art survey is an output of the international HCI-KDD expert network and features 22 carefully selected and peer-reviewed chapters on hot topics in machine learning for health informatics; they discuss open problems and future challenges in order to stimulate further research and international progress in this field.
