Projeto de investigação financiado pela Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, no âmbito do Protocolo com o Alto Comissariado para a Imigração e o Diálogo Intercultural, e desenvolvido pelo Centro de Estudos Sociais, em parceria com o CESNOVA. A obra procura responder às seguintes questões: Quais as razões para a falta de mobilização dos potenciais votantes estrangeiros em Portugal? Como explicar o facto de muitos dos que integram o grupo de recenseados serem eleitos com sucesso? De que maneira o envolvimento dos imigrantes em instituições democráticas formalmente representativas ao nível local difere do comportamento da maioria? Será que este facto reproduz substancialmente a matriz política da sociedade portuguesa?
Migrações na Europa e em Portugal
Maria Baganha deixou uma marca indelével, que as gerações vindouras de investigadores não poderão ignorar. Fazer ciência é também saber posicionar-se em relação ao adquirido, ao que as gerações que nos precederam e aquela a que pertencemos fizeram, e contribuir para a construção de uma ciência cumulativa. Por essa via, fazer ciência é também construir uma comunidade de pares, com os seus marcadores - eventos, instituições, pessoas. Maria Baganha pertence, por mérito próprio, à galeria das referências dos estudos sobre migrações. O maior tributo que se lhe pode prestar é a utilização das categorias da sua obra como hipóteses que merecem ser testadas. Era exatamente essa atitude crítica, o culto do rigor e o princípio básico da problematização que ensinava aos seus alunos.
African Dynamics in a Multipolar World
Fifty years after the foundation of the OAU and the consolidation of most African states and institutions, the international panorama and Africa’s position in it have changed considerably. The world's geopolitical and economic configuration has evolved, with new actors appearing in a new period of globalization. In tone with ECAS 2013, this volume proposes that the experiences appearing in Africa question dominant paradigms in terms of political practice and academic reflection and thus offer a clear challenge to the academic community. The volume offers clues to answer questions such as: What is the impact of the current processes of globalization for African countries and African citizens? How should African Studies be engaged to gauge African dynamics, both at a local and global level? What interdisciplinary means and tools should be brought in to produce an epistemologically relevant view (or narrative) of the issues under analysis?

Postcolonial Migrants and Identity Politics
These transfers of sovereignty resulted in extensive, unforeseen movements of citizens and subjects to their former countries. The phenomenon of postcolonial migration affected not only European nations, but also the United States, Japan and post-Soviet Russia. The political and societal reactions to the unexpected and often unwelcome migrants was significant to postcolonial migrants' identity politics and how these influenced metropolitan debates about citizenship, national identity and colonial history. The contributors explore the historical background and contemporary significance of these migrations and discuss the ethnic and class composition and the patterns of integration of the migrant population.
Unemployment in Southern Europe
Unemployment is one of Southern Europe's most serious political problems. Though much has been written about unemployment's causes and cures, systematic attention to its consequences is lacking.
