Karoly's life was harsh, taken to the front and used as a human-shield by the Romanians during WWII. He was arrested after the war by Russian Communists and sent to a forced labour camp. He esaped in 1956 and rebuilt his life in England. This is his story.He was born in January 1928, forty kilometres east of Budapest. His village was ninety-eight per cent Catholic, a rural, agrarian based Catholic community, which was very strict. At five, he was an altar boy on Sundays. On 1st September, 1939, he enrolled in the Grammar school at Nagykata where he would spend four years. Then his world was turned upside down.

In Urgeschichte, Römerzeit und Frühmittelalter wurden Grundlagen für die Folgezeiten geschaffen. Im Hochmittelalter wuchs die Bevölkerung, neue Dörfer, neue Städte, Klöster, Burgen und neue Länder entstanden – die heutigen Bundesländer der Republik. Durch die jahrhundertelange Herrschaft der Habsburger wurden diese Länder miteinander und mit vielen anderen europäischen Regionen – Italien, Spanien, Belgien, Ungarn, Böhmen, Polen, Slowenien, Kroatien - verbunden. Die Monarchie der Habsburger ermöglichte "ihren" Völkern trotz aller Kritik eine positive kulturelle und politische Entwicklung. Hingegen konnte die junge Republik Österreich das Erbe des kriegsbedingten Mangels nicht bewältigen, das nach dem Zerfall der Monarchie 1918 durch Bankenkrisen und politische Gegensätze verschärft wurde. Ein nationaler Konsens fehlte. Die Demokratie wich 1933 einer konservativen Diktatur. 1938 kam es zum vielfach bejubelten "Anschluss" an Hitlers Deutschland. Doch 1945 erhielt diese Republik eine "zweite Chance".
