Cartographers, geographers and cognitive psychologists have put emphasis on the relevance of spatial cognition in the last decades. The growing importance of understanding cognitive structures in the use of modern cartographic media is frequently expressed in current papers published by cartographers Investigating cognitive impacts on map use requires established methods of experimental sciences to derive robust and reliable messages for the formation of theory in cartography Throughout the last decade, the international cartographic community has regularly highlighted the relevance of experimental studies for the future of a user-centered cartography. The aim of this book is bringing togeth...

Modern Approaches to the Visualization of Landscapes

The volume deals with the effects of digitization on spatial and especially landscape construction processes and their visualization. A focus lies on the generation mechanisms of 'landscapes' with digital tools of cartography and geomatics, including possibilities to model and visualize non-visual stimuli, but also spatial-temporal changes of physical space. Another focus is on how virtual spaces have already become part of the social and individual construction of landscape. Potentials of combining modern media of spatial visualization and (constructivist) landscape research are discussed.

Multisensory Landscapes

This book provides a broad view on multisensory landscapes from multiple perspectives. It includes theoretical perspectives as well as case studies. Different theoretical perspectives on landscape emerging from research in the last decades also require a differentiated approach to landscape phenomena, going beyond the visual. For example, a social constructivist approach to the social world foregrounds the processes of negotiating social ‚realities‘. This is not limited to visual aspects, and is not based on a clear physical measurability with an accompanying (purely quantitative) recording. A phenomenological approach, for example, places the synesthetic experience of landscape at the c...

The Rhine

In two centuries of non-stop hydraulic tinkering the Rhine River has been modified more than any other large river in the world. This title examines the environmental history of the Rhine from its headwaters in the Swiss Alps to its delta in the Netherlands. It looks at the great river engineering projects of the 19th and 20th centuries, and assesses the impact of the coal, steel and chemical industries on its banks.

This book presents the proceedings of HealthGrid 2010, the latest in the annual open forum for the integration of grid technologies, e science and e health methods and their application in biomedicine and healthcare. Previous conferences have highlighted the need to involve all actors, such as physicians, scientists and technologists, and have served to demonstrate the usefulness of grids to potential application domains, at least at the prototype level. More recently, cloud computing seems set to make an impact as a paradigm more readily acceptable in the practice of healthcare informatics, whilst grids may remain the infrastructure of choice for researchers. Included in this volume are the...

Die Landschaft interpretieren: Interdisziplinäre Ansätze

Die Landschaft interpretieren: Interdisziplinäre Ansätze

There is no generally valid, recognised definition of what landscape actually is. On the basis of its relatedness to the environment, to aesthetics, territory, society, politics, economics, geography, planning, ethnology and philosophy, the concept of landscape is considered to be a "composite" notion shaped by a thousand years of Central European ideas and of literary and art history. In other words, the very term "landscape" is ambiguous and it is used in different ways both in the scholarly world and everyday speech. The aim of this volume is to present various possible approaches to the phenomenon of "landscape". Far from laying any claim to be exhaustive or comprehensive we have simply tried to do justice to the overarching interdisciplinary approach of the Zentrum für Landschaftsinterpretation und Tourismus (ZELT: Centre for Landscape Interpretation and Tourism) by singling out and addressing individual instances of this fascinating multifaceted phenomenon.

Map-based Mobile Services

The development of wireless telecommunication and ubiquitous computing te- nologies has led to a growing mobile population and dramatically changed p- terns of working and everyday life. A smooth and safe mobility is only possible when the mobile person is well-informed of the happenings in his ambient en- ronments. Location-sensitive maps have proved a strong enhancement to what a mobile user can directly perceive from his ambient environments. Since ancient times the map has been the favorite communication language of spatial infor- tion. It is even more the case for mobile applications where brand-new maps can be wirelessly retrieved or generated in real-time. The upsurge of map-based s- ...

Grid Economics and Business Models

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Workshop on Grid Economics and Business Models, GECON 2009, held in Delft, The Netherlands, August 2009. The 8 full papers included in this volume were carefully selected from 25 submissions. They aim at presenting current results and innovative research in the area of Grid economics. The papers are organized in topical sections on market models and mechanisms, business support tools and business-related resource allocation. The proceedings are rounded off by 6 papers on research-in-progress which were selected from many paper submissions. These papers provide an overview about ongoing research projects on Grid and Cloud economics, addressing economic-related research in Cloud computing and software services.
