Neuropharmacology and Behavior

Science lost one of its distinguished researchers in the fields of biological psychiatry and neuropsychopharmacology on March 4, 1975, with the death of Harold Himwich. Some of his colleagues, friends, and former associates have expressed their esteem for this gentle person by the contribution of chapters in this book. Since this book can represent only an incomplete indication of Harold Himwich's influence, the editors have included his complete bibliography at the end of this volume. Harold Himwich's research career was divided into several phases, some of which overlapped. Starting with his first paper on rhabdomyoma of the ovary in 1920, he was entranced by research as well as by the puzzles and results which it promised. During the period that he was a resident and house officer at Bellevue Hospital in New York, he studied the physiology of muscular exercise. This work led him into studies of exercise in various types of disease. With Meyerhoff in Kiel, Germany, he began studying the respiratory quotient of muscle, and after returning to this country, he produced a number of papers on respiratory quotients of various organs including the brain.

Genetic Toxicology of Complex Mixtures

Contained in this volume are the proceedings of the international conference on the "Genetic Toxicology of Complex Mixtures," held from July 4-7, 1989, in Washington, DC. This meeting was a satellite of the "Fifth International Conference on Environmental Mutagens" and the seventh in a biennial series of conferences on "Short-term Bioassays in the Analysis of Complex Environmental Mixtures. " Our central objective in calling together key researchers from around the world was to extend our knowledge of the application of the methods of genetic toxicology and analytical chemistry in the evaluation of chemical mixtures as they exist in the environment. This conference emphasized the study of ge...

Quantum Machines

What is a quantum machine? Can we say that lasers and transistors are quantum machines? After all, physicists advertise these devices as the two main spin-offs of the understanding of quantum physics. In a true quantum machine, the signal collective variables must themselves be treated as quantum operators. Other engineered quantum systems based on natural, rather than artificial, degrees of freedom can also qualify as quantum machines. This book provides the basic knowledge needed to understand and investigate the physics of these novel systems.

Quantum Information, 2 Volume Set

This comprehensive textbook on the rapidly advancing field introduces readers to the fundamental concepts of information theory and quantum entanglement, taking into account the current state of research and development. It thus covers all current concepts in quantum computing, both theoretical and experimental, before moving on to the latest implementations of quantum computing and communication protocols. It contains problems and exercises and is therefore ideally suited for students and lecturers in physics and informatics, as well as experimental and theoretical physicists in academia and industry who work in the field of quantum information processing. The second edition incorporates important recent developments such as quantum metrology, quantum correlations beyond entanglement, and advances in quantum computing with solid state devices.

The Carcinogenic Effects Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

The Carcinogenic Effects Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

This book provides an overview on the molecular mode of action of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). PAHs are by-products arising from incomplete combustion of organic matter that are frequently released into our environment, and thus are ubiquitously detectable. Many PAHs are strong carcinogens in rodent bioassays and have been linked to increased incidences of various types of cancer in humans. The present book covers all aspects of PAH-induced carcinogenesis; it is a collection of articles written by some of the most recognizable PAH researchers, reviewing the present knowledge in this field. The topics include: exposure to and biomonitoring of PAHs in the human population; metabolic activation of PAHs; genotoxicity and repair of PAH-induced DNA damage; and factors modulating individual susceptibility to the deleterious effects of PAHs.

Providing a general approach to the understanding and management of all forms of chronic pain, this book offers a clear and reader-friendly format that clarifies procedures in the diagnosis, assessment, and treatment of the most common chronic non-cancer pain entities. Describing various types of intractable non-cancer pain, including neuropathic

The MAK-Collection for Occupational Health and Safety

The MAK-Collection for Occupational Health and Safety

This volume provides documentations for the established MAK values (maximum workplace concentrations) of selected occupational toxicants, including an authoritative review of the available toxicological studies and data. For each substance, the toxic effects, mechanisms and modes of action, toxicogenetics and metabolism, effects in man and animals are described. In addition, the carcinogenic, germ-cell mutagenic, sensitizing or skin-resorptive effects as well as their toxicity to the reproductive system are evaluated, plus basic physico-chemical data are provided. The documentations are thus not only essential for the application of MAK values but also provide a concise toxicological overview for each substance.

Angiogenesis in Inflammation: Mechanisms and Clinical Correlates

This much-needed text develops current knowledge on the mechanisms of angiogenesis at the molecular and cellular levels as they relate to inflammation, including acute and chronic inflammation, neurogenic initiation, and the role of the multiple cellular components that comprise inflammation. The volume brings together experts in each of these fields to link the molecular and cellular processes in angiogenesis to those of inflammation and disease, culminating in a discourse on areas for future therapies.
