Literature without Frontiers
This volume explores the indispensability of a transnational perspective for the construction and writing of literary histories of the Low Countries from 1200- 1800. It looks at the role of mediators such as translators, printers, and editors, at characteristics of literary genres and the possibilities they offered for literary boundary crossing and adaptation, and at the role of regions and urban centers as multilingual hubs. This collection demonstrates the centrality of transnational perspectives for elucidating the complex inter-relationship between Netherlandic and European literary history. The Low Countries were a dynamic site for new literary production and transnational exchange that shaped and reshaped the intellectual landscape of premodern Europe. Binnen het Hoogheemraadschap van Rijnland is eeuwenlang turf gewonnen. Ondanks het feit dat de overheid door regelgeving probeerde de schade voor het land zoveel mogelijk te beperken, leidde de turfwinning in de loop van de zeventiende eeuw tot grote waterstaatkundige problemen. In 1680 voerde Rijnland een nieuw reglement in: stuivergeld werd geheven en nieuwe consenten werden alleen nog verleend op voorwaarde van droogmaking van de waterplas die zou ontstaan. De voorheen versnipperde turfwinning werd vanaf dat moment projectmatig opgezet. De reglementering leidde ook tot een nauwkeurige registratie van de veenlieden die de turf lieten baggeren en de omvang van de productie. Gebaseerd op deze gegevens, gecombineerd met materiaal uit notariële en rechterlijke archieven, geeft Arjan van 't Riet een gedetailleerd beeld van de dagelijkse werkzaamheden van veenlieden, turfarbeiders en turfschippers in de zogenaamde buitenrijnse ambachten van Rijnland tussen 1680 en 1800.

Geschichte der altgermanistischen Edition
Der Beginn der germanistischen Editionstätigkeit im frühen 19. Jahrhundert ist wesentlich von Arbeiten zur älteren deutschen Literatur geprägt. Anhand von hervorgehobenen Editionen und Persönlichkeiten, begonnen mit Karl Lachmann, den Brüdern Grimm und Friedrich Heinrich von der Hagen, wird in diesem Band die Entwicklung der altgermanistischen Editionspraxis bis ins frühe 20. Jahrhundert nachgezeichnet. Die fünfzehn Beiträge bieten dazu die biographische wie fachhistorische Situierung der behandelten Editionen, die Analyse des editorischen Vorgehens sowie den Ausblick auf ihre Nachwirkungen. Im Analyseteil wird besonderer Wert auf den Umgang mit der Palette editorischer Problemstellungen in den einzelnen Editionen gelegt (Überlieferungsvielfalt, Varianzen, Fassungsbildung, Stemmatik, Emendation, Fehlerbegriff, Normalisierung u. v. m.). Nachzuvollziehen ist, wie editorische Verfahren und Problemlösungsstrategien erprobt, teils verworfen und konsequent verbessert werden. Dass diese Verhandlung von Verfahren durchaus auch konfrontativ verlief, in wissenschaftlicher wie auch persönlicher Hinsicht, bietet einen Einblick in die Soziologie der frühen Fachgeschichte.
A Century of Fluid Mechanics in The Netherlands
In October 1918, Jan Burgers, 23 years old, started as professor of ‘aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, and their applications’ at the Technical University in Delft.
