Metaphrasis: A Byzantine Concept of Rewriting and Its Hagiographical Products represents a first and authoritative discussion of rewriting in Byzantium. It brings together a rich variety of articles that treat the topic of hagiographical rewriting from various angles.The contributors discuss and comment on different kinds of texts in Greek and other languages, including Apophthegmata Patrum, Passions, Saints’ Lives, Enkomia, Miracle Collections, Synaxaria, and Menologia which date from late antiquity to late Byzantium. The volume offers a series of case studies examining how the same legends evolved through time by the process of rewriting. It is shown that the main driving force behind such rewriting was adaptation to different audiences and contexts. This work argues that rewriting is central to Christian cultures in the Middle Ages. Trends and Turning Points presents sixteen articles, examining the discursive construction of the late antique and Byzantine world, focusing specifically on the utilisation of trends and turning points to make stuff from the past, whether texts, matter, or action, meaningful. Contributions are divided into four complementary strands, Scholarly Constructions, Literary Trends, Constructing Politics, and Turning Points in Religious Landscapes. Each strand cuts across traditional disciplinary boundaries and periodisation, placing historical, archaeological, literary, and architectural concerns in discourse, whilst drawing on examples from the full range of the medieval Roman past. The Antiatticist
The so-called Antiatticista is a Greek Atticistic lexicon crucial for understanding the Atticism of the 2nd cent. CE. The anonymous author approved a broader idea of Attic language in contrast to the most rigorous Atticists. For this (polemic) purpose, he used some older sources (in particular Hellenistic ones, such as Aristophanes of Byzantium) where he could find rich quotations from classical authors, especially from comic poets. Given that many of them are no longer extant, this work now represents the only source for them. The first critical edition of this lexicon is prefaced by a survey of its textual tradition, direct and indirect, which concerns its relationship to the Byzantine lexicon Synagoge. The authorship, the typology, and the sources of the work are also investigated. The unedited annotations by David Ruhnkenius for his planned edition of the text are appended. Comprehensive indexes are provided at the end of the book.
