HMRI - A Toolbox for Using Quantitative MRI in Neuroscience and Clinical Research
Neuroscience and clinical researchers are increasingly interested in quantitative magnetic resonance imaging (qMRI) due to its sensitivity to micro-structural properties of brain tissue such as axon, myelin, iron and water concentration.We introduce the hMRI-toolbox, an easy-to-use tool openly available on GitHub, for qMRI data handling and processing, presented together with a tutorial and example dataset. This toolbox allows the estimation of high-quality multi-parameter qMRI maps (longitudinal and effective transverse relaxation rates R1 and R? 2, proton density PD and magnetisation transfer MT saturation) that can be used for accurate delineation of subcortical brain structures and calculation of standard and novel MRI biomarkers of tissue microstructure. Embedded in the Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) framework, it can be readily combined with existing SPM toolboxes for estimating diffusion MRI parameter maps, and it benefits from the extensive range of established SPM tools for high-accuracy spatial registration and statistical inferences. The hMRI-toolbox is an efficient, robust and simple framework for investigating qMRI data in neuroscience and clinical research.

Introduction: In this thesis, MEGA-edited Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) has been used for the purpose of non-invasive detection of !- aminobutyric acid (GABA) within the brain. GABA is the main inhibitory neurotransmitter in the human central nervous system, and glutamate is the corresponding main excitatory neurotransmitter. A balance between GABA and glutamate is crucial for healthy neurotransmission within the brain, and regional altered concentrations have been linked to certain neurological disorders. This Research Topic covers some of the latest research on brain and behavior in health and disease in Africa. With its untapped resources and unique situations, “Neuroscience in Africa” has the potential to contribute to a better understanding of human brain function both in health and disease. The diverse African fauna display a range of specializations in brain structure/function relationships as a result of adaptations to the environment. Exploration of these may lead to insights into coping strategies which could be extrapolated to humans. Africa’s unique flora is being investigated for anti-inflammatory, antinociceptive, antioxidant, antiepileptogenic and neuroprotective properties to determine its potential for use in the treatment of human brain disorders.
