Elektroakustische Musik in der DDR
Elektroakustische Musik hat auch vor der DDR nicht Halt gemacht: Es wurden westliche Werke rezipiert und auch, wenn es erst ab Mitte der 80er Jahre geeignete Studios in der DDR gab, haben einige Komponisten kreative Möglichkeiten gefunden, sich mit elektroakustischer Klangerzeugung und -bearbeitung zu beschäftigen. Im vorliegenden Band werden die treibenden Akteure und Institutionen, zu denen neben Studios auch Festivals und Ensembles gehörten, beleuchtet. Es wird zudem der Frage nachgegangen, wie die elektroakustischen Kompositionsmittel in den Werken, die in der DDR entstanden sind, eingesetzt wurden und ob es hier einen Zusammenhang mit den ästhetischen Vorgaben der DDR-Kulturpolitik gab. Anhand von zeitgenössischen Rezensionen elektroakustischer Werke und Aufführungen wird dargestellt, wie sich ein Wandel in der DDR-Kulturpolitik insbesondere in der Beurteilung vom Verhältnis des ausübenden Musikers zur Technik, von inhuman zu fortschrittlich, vollzieht.

Stories of Tonality in the Age of François-Joseph Fétis explores the concept of musical tonality through the writings of the Belgian musicologist François-Joseph Fétis (1784–1867), who was singularly responsible for theorizing and popularizing the term in the nineteenth century. Thomas Christensen weaves a rich story in which tonality emerges as a theoretical construct born of anxiety and alterity for Europeans during this time as they learned more about “other” musics and alternative tonal systems. Tonality became a central vortex in which French musicians thought—and argued—about a variety of musical repertoires, be they contemporary European musics of the stage, concert hall, or church, folk songs from the provinces, microtonal scale systems of Arabic and Indian music, or the medieval and Renaissance music whose notational traces were just beginning to be deciphered by scholars. Fétis’s influential writings offer insight into how tonality ingrained itself within nineteenth-century music discourse, and why it has continued to resonate with uncanny prescience throughout the musical upheavals of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

Afterlives of Romantic Intermediality addresses the manifold, even global artistic developments that were initiated by European Romantics. In the first section, the contributors show how the rising perspective of intermediality was discussed in philosophical terms and adapted itself to Romantic literature and music. In the second section, the contributors show how post-Romantic writers, visual artists, and composers have engaged with Romantic heritage. By exploring primary works that range from European arts to Latin American literature, these essays focus on the interdisciplinary developments that have emerged in literature, music, painting, film, architecture, and video art. Overall, the contributions in this volume demonstrate that intermedial connections—or sometimes the conscious lack of such connections—embody intriguing aspects of modernity and postmodernity.
Monumentale Erinnerung – ästhetische Erneuerung
Die Musikkritik und die musikbezogenen Schriften der sogenannten Neudeutschen sind Thema dieser Studie. Als Neudeutsche Schule wird die lockere Gruppierung von deutschen und französischen bzw. französischsprachigen Komponisten des 19. Jahrhunderts bezeichnet, zu der vor allem Richard Wagner, Hector Berlioz, Franz Liszt und am Rande auch Robert Schumann und Schüler wie Hans von Bülow zählen. Untersucht werden sowohl die neudeutschen Schriften zu Beethovens Werk als auch die auf eigene Kompositionen bezogenen Texte der genannten Autoren. Im Mittelpunkt steht hier zum einen die Frage nach der durch die Erinnerung an Beethoven inspirierten progressiven Musikästhetik in Texten der Neudeutschen. Zum anderen behandelt der Band anhand der neudeutschen Beethoven-Rezeption die sich wandelnden Strategien des Medientransfers in Bezug auf die Versprachlichung von Musik nach 1800.
