Status Review Report of 5 Species of Foreign Sturgeon
"This status review report was conducted in response to a petition received from WildEarth Guardians and Friends of Animals on March 12, 2012 to list 15 species of foreign sturgeon as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). It was determined that five of the species fell within NMFS' jurisdiction (Acipenser naccarii (Adriatic sturgeon) and A. sturio (Baltic sturgeon/European sturgeon) in the Western Europe region, A. sinensis (Chinese sturgeon) in the Yangtze River region, and A. mikadoi (Sakhalin sturgeon) and Huso dauricus (Kaluga sturgeon) in the Amur River Basin/Sea of Japan/Sea of Okhotsk region) because of significant use of estuarine and/or marine habitats. To gain a better mechanistic understanding of the observed sex steroid elevations we examined mRNA expression patterns of steroidogenic enzymes (P450SCC) and receptor proteins (ER[Beta] and GR). We found no significant differences in mRNA expression patterns, indicating that the observed sex steroid increases were not likely due to an up-regulation of gonadal synthesis.
