Kommunale Selbstverwaltung im modernen Staat
Die lokale Politikebene steht wieder im Mittelpunkt wissenschaftlicher und praktischer Erörterungen. Aktuelle Diskussionen über die Modernisierung "des" Staates können sich dabei an Entwicklungsprozessen orientieren, die wir aus der Zeit der Industrialisierung in Deutschland kennen. Vor diesem Hintergrund ist wichtigstes Ergebnis dieses Bandes die Herausarbeitung des deutschen Typs der kommunalen Selbstverwaltung, der in seinen Grundzügen bis heute erhalten, aktuell jedoch erheblich gefährdet ist. Daher wählt der Autor als Ansatzpunkt für die Analyse die gegenwärtige Form der Selbstverwaltung. Durchgängig geht er zwei Fragestellungen nach: 1) Welche Rolle spielt die Kommune im Modernisierungsprozeß der Gesellschaft? 2) Wie ist dieser Prozeß unter demokratietheoretischen Aspekten zu bewerten?

Throughout most of history, medicinal plants and their active metabolites have represented a valuable source of compounds used to prevent and to cure several diseases. Interest in natural compounds is still high as they represent a source of novel biologically/pharmacologically active compounds. Due to their high structural diversity and complexity, they are interesting structural scaffolds that can offer promising candidates for the study of new drugs, functional foods, and food additives. Plant extracts are a highly complex mixture of compounds and qualitative and quantitative analyses are necessary to ensure their quality. Furthermore, greener methods of extraction and analysis are needed today. This book is based on articles submitted for publication in the Special Issue entitled “Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis of Bioactive Natural Products” that collected original research and reviews on these topics.
The Decline of Life
The Decline of Life is an ambitious and absorbing study of old age in eighteenth-century England. Drawing on a wealth of sources - literature, correspondence, poor house and workhouse documents and diaries - Susannah Ottaway considers a wide range of experiences and expectations of age in the period, and demonstrates that the central concern of ageing individuals was to continue to live as independently as possible into their last days. Ageing men and women stayed closely connected to their families and communities, in relationships characterised by mutual support and reciprocal obligations. Despite these aspects of continuity, however, older individuals' ability to maintain their autonomy, and the nature of the support available to them once they did fall into necessity declined significantly in the last decades of the century. As a result, old age was increasingly marginalised. Historical demographers, historical gerontologists, sociologists, social historians and women's historians will find this book essential reading.
