Der Briefwechsel des Zürcher Antistes Heinrich Bullinger (1504–1575) ist eine bedeutende epistolarische Quelle sowohl in politischer, kultureller, kirchenhistorischer, mentalitätsgeschichtlicher, biografischer als auch in wirtschaftlicher, meteorologischer und astronomischer Hinsicht. Im vorliegenden Band sind die 261 erhaltenen Briefe aus dem Jahr 1545 veröffentlicht. Der Eidgenossenschaft und ihren Verbündeten kommt in der Korrespondenz mit Personen aus Basel, Bern, Lausanne, Graubünden (darunter italienische Glaubesflüchtlinge) und St. Gallen eine besondere Bedeutung zu. So ergeben sich etwa neue Erkenntnisse zur Reformation im Appenzellerland sowie die Möglichkeit, die Entstehung der Eidgenössischen Chronik von Johannes Stumpf und Vadians Mitarbeit daran zu verfolgen. Auf kirchenhistorischer Ebene spielen der Kölner Reformationsversuch und die Auseinandersetzungen der Zürcher Kirche mit Martin Luther und Johannes Cochläus eine besondere Rolle. Auch zu Johannes Calvin liefert der Band bislang Unbekanntes.
