The French Language in Russia
-- With support from the Arts and Humanities Research Council of the UK and the Deutsches Historisches Institut Moskau --The French Language in Russia provides the fullest examination and discussion to date of the adoption of the French language by the elites of imperial Russia during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is interdisciplinary, approaching its subject from the angles of various kinds of history and historical sociolinguistics. Beyond its bearing on some of the grand narratives of Russian thought and literature, this book may afford more general insight into the social, political, cultural, and literary implications and effects of bilingualism in a speech community over a long period. It should also enlarge understanding of francophonie as a pan-European phenomenon. On the broadest plane, it has significance in an age of unprecedented global connectivity, for it invites us to look beyond the experience of a single nation and the social groups and individuals within it in order to discover how languages and the cultures and narratives associated with them have been shared across national boundaries.

Estonian Elegy
Born in 1945 in Pärnu, Jüri Talvet has become one of Estonia's foremost literary figures. He holds degrees in English Philology and Hispanic Literature, and since 1974 has taught comparative literature at Tartu University, serving since 1992 as Chair of the University's Department of Comparative Literature and since 1994 as Chair of the Estonian Association of Comparative Literature. He has travelled on grants and as a translator to Cuba, Mexico, Nicaragua, Spain, and the U.S.A., and has lectured in Finland, Norway, Spain, Poland, Sweden, and the Netherlands. In 1997 he was awarded the prestigious Juhan Liiv Prize of Poetry. His essay book in English, A Call for Cultural Symbiosis, was published in 2005 by Guernica. He has translated classical and modern Spanish language and English language poetry into Estonian (Quevedo, Calderón, Byron, Aleixandre, Espriu, etc.). He lives with his wife Margit and their three children in Tartu.

Juri Lotman (1922-1993) oli maailmakuulus semiootik, kirjandusteadlane ja kultuuriuurija, TÜ professor, mitme ülikooli audoktor. Ta oli Briti (1977), Norra (1987) ja Rootsi (1989) TA välisliige, Eesti TA liige (1990). Tema bibliograafia sisaldab üle tuhande publikatsiooni ja see arv kasvab. "Sajandi 100 suurkuju" projekti raames valiti JL 20. sajandi Eesti teadlaseks. JL raamatuid on tõlgitud kümnetesse keeltesse, tema nime kannab instituut Saksamaal, tema mälestuseks korraldatakse konverentse eri maades ja mandritel jne. Käesolev raamat on pühendatud Juri Lotmani elu vähemakadeemilisele tahule. Professorit kujutatakse sellisena nagu teda tundsid kolleegid ja sõbrad. Raamatu koostas semiootik, kirjandus- ja keeleteadlane Mihhail Lotman.
