This special issue focuses on literary texts by African writers in which the protagonist returns to his/her 'original' or ancestral 'home' in Africa from other parts of the world. Ideas of return - intentional and actual - have been a consistent feature of the literature of Africa and the African diaspora: from Equiano's autobiography in 1789 to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's 2013 novel 'Americanah'. African literature has represented returnees in a range of locations and dislocations including having a sense of belonging, being alienated in a country they can no longer recognize, or experiencing a multiple sense of place. Contributors, writing on literature from the 1970s to the present, examine the extent to which the original place can be reclaimed with or without renegotiations of 'home'. Change as a Distinct Property of Language
Peter Pryce is working on the premise that there is “never a moment of true standstill in language” (Keller, 1994:6) as it is by nature in a continuous process of development. Pryce embarks on a descriptive study of language with a view to answering the following questions: Why and how do languages change? He uses the Finnish language to illustrate that: Language innovation leads to language variation. He observes the phenomenon of the influence of foreignisms on Finnish discourses and concludes that it is an instantiation of a general characteristic of language change. Islamophobia in Non-Western Online Newspapers
The media attention towards Islam has increased recently, but meeting the quality standards in reporting the religion is often of great concern in this regard. This issue has been debated since the aftermath of violent incidents such as the 9/11 attacks in 2001, the Afghanistan War in 2002, the Iraq War in 2003, the Danish cartoon row in 2005, the London bombings in 2005, the Paris attacks in 2015, and the New Zealand shootings in 2017. In reporting violence, the media tend to construct a negative image of Islam, which is likely to reproduce unfounded hostility toward Islam and Muslims, known as Islamophobia. This book provides a systematic analysis of how non-western online newspapers reproduce Islamophobia in news reporting.
How Yoruba and Igbo Became Different Languages
