Ilkka Heiskasen tarina reippaista taiteilijavuosista suurperheen isäksi. Olen ainoa Helsingin kaupunginteatterin näyttelijä, jonka poliisi on hakenut pukuhuoneesta käsiraudoissa. Sain silmittömän raivokohtauksen, kun Holmbergin Kalle tuli antamaan palautetta harjoituksen jälkeen. Pistin pukuhuoneen kalustuksen säpäleiksi ja rauhoituin vasta putkassa. Seuraavana aamuna teatterinjohtaja sytytti tupakan ja tarjosi minullekin. Näyttelijä Ilkka ”Ilu” Heiskanen syntyi Haminassa perheensä kuopukseksi vuonna 1962. Privatization and Culture
CARlA BODO Board Member of the Cultural Information and Research Centres liaison in Europe (CIRCLE) and Director of the Observatory for the Performing Arts at the Department of the Performing Arts of the Italian Prime Minister's Office, Roma The relation between the public and the private sector in the field of culture, the central theme of this publication, was thoroughly debated during the 1997 CIRCLE Round Table in Amsterdam. It was not the first time CIRCLE addressed this issue. In 1988 CIRCLE'S Bureau was invited to participate in a seminar in Budapest on The State, the Market and Culture. I will never forget the emotional impact of Sacha Rubinstein's demonization of state sup port and his apotheosis of the role of the market in the cultural field in Russia. So, in ad vance of actual events, we suddenly had a premonition of what was going to happen, ofthe turmoil which was about to radically change the socio-political scene of Central and East ern Europe. Six years later, in 1994, we met again in Budapest for a Conference on The Distribu tion of Roles between Government and Arts Councils, Associations and Foundations.
The Transformation of UN Conflict Management
The world has vowed "Never again" in memory of the 800,000 Rwandans and other groups slaughtered by génocidaires. Yet, ever since the Holocaust, the international community has repeatedly betrayed its pledge, most notably in 1994 with regard to the Rwandan Tutsi, and again ten years later in Darfur. This book examines how the UN failed to prevent or halt the Rwandan genocide: the most efficient mass killing in history. It offers a new explanation, focussing on the structure of the UN and four mechanisms which were pertinent to UN conflict management at that time: early warning; bureaucratic rationalisation; organisational learning; and Western normalisation. New Xenophobia in Europe
In the last years we have witnessed, predominantly within Europe, a dramatic upsurge in xenophobic attitudes and ethnic violence. This book analyses most European countries as far as the feeling for, the treatment of, and the action against foreigners is concerned and describes various aspects of the complexity and variation of the xenophobia theme. The economic recession, uncertainty about the future of granted values and institutions (like the EU, NATO, and OSCE) has brought xenophobia back to the forefront of the European agenda. This book is the product of an initiative by researchers at the European University Institute in Florence, and takes advantage of both the sophisticated research undertaken at and the multi-national composition of the Institute: all co-authors describe their own country, all have several years of experience as social scientists working on dissertations and in projects of related interest, and (nearly) all of them are EUI members or alumni.
