Advanced Spinel Ferrite Nanocomposites for Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Applications presents recent developments in advanced spinel ferrite nanocomposites for electromagnetic interference shielding, including microwave absorption applications. The book includes the basics of shielding mechanisms, synthesis of advanced nanocomposites, and characterization, as well as results analysis. It also discusses the relationship between nanocomposite structure and physical properties. The book systematically explores how spinel ferrite nanoparticle composites are utilized with polymer, carbon source materials (carbon nanotube, graphene, etc.), metal nanoparticles, metal oxide nanoparticles, ...

Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal

This book, “Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal: History of U. S. Marine Corps Operations in World War II, Volume I,” covers Marine Corps participation through the first precarious year of World War II, when disaster piled on disaster and there seemed no way to check Japanese aggression. Advanced bases and garrisons were isolated and destroyed; Guam, Wake, and the Philippines. The sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, “day that will live in infamy,” seriously crippled the U. S. Pacific Fleet; yet that cripple rose to turn the tide of the entire war at Midway. Shortly thereafter, the U. S. Marines launched on Guadalcanal an offensive which was destined to end only on the home islands of the Empire. T...

Computational Intelligence (CI) has been a tremendously active area of - search for the past decade or so. There are many successful applications of CI in many sub elds of biology, including bioinformatics, computational - nomics, protein structure prediction, or neuronal systems modeling and an- ysis. However, there still are many open problems in biology that are in d- perate need of advanced and e cient computational methodologies to deal with tremendous amounts of data that those problems are plagued by. - fortunately, biology researchers are very often unaware of the abundance of computational techniques that they could put to use to help them analyze and understand the data underlying ...

Invasion Biology

There are many hypotheses describing the interactions involved in biological invasions, but it is largely unknown whether they are backed up by empirical evidence. This book fills that gap by developing a tool for assessing research hypotheses and applying it to twelve invasion hypotheses, using the hierarchy-of-hypotheses (HoH) approach, and mapping the connections between theory and evidence. In Part 1, an overview chapter of invasion biology is followed by an introduction to the HoH approach and short chapters by science theorists and philosophers who comment on the approach. Part 2 outlines the invasion hypotheses and their interrelationships. These include biotic resistance and island susceptibility hypotheses, disturbance hypothesis, invasional meltdown hypothesis, enemy release hypothesis, evolution of increased competitive ability and shifting defence hypotheses, tens rule, phenotypic plasticity hypothesis, Darwin's naturalization and limiting similarity hypotheses and the propagule pressure hypothesis. Part 3 provides a synthesis and suggests future directions for invasion research.
