French theories on text and discourse
It could be alleged that present-day French linguistics is characterized by a specific connection between the epistemology of text and that of discourse. The contributions gathered in this volume aim to reconsider this link – or dichotomy? – in light of the latest research developments. They are organized in three parts: the first explores the text-discourse connection, while the second and third tackle the epistemologies of text and discourse.
Unlikely Stories
This study brings together a number of related critical issues, including the causal laws that attempt to govern fictional worlds, the reader's implication in the causal dilemmas that confront major characters, and the philosophical and ideological ascriptions of cause that are variously embodied, interrogated, or parodied. One of the most significant features of this study is its disclosure of just how fundamental and widespread causal issues are in complex narratives - and how insistently they are thematized in twentieth-century works.
Grammar and Text
This volume brings together a collection of papers based on presentations given at the 10th and 11th Fora for Linguistic Sharing, organised by the Young Researchers Group of the Centro de Linguística da Universidade Nova de Lisboa (CLUNL) and held at Universidade NOVA de Lisboa, Portugal, on the 27th and 28th November 2015 and on the 25th November 2016, respectively. The papers are authored by young researchers in linguistics and present the results of original research in two broad areas, namely text and discourse linguistics and grammar. This volume also includes a brief history of the Forum for Linguistic Sharing written by its founders, Audria Leal, Carla Teixeira, Isabelle Simões Marques and Matilde Gonçalves; a keynote article on text linguistics by Matilde Gonçalves; and a keynote article on word formation by Maria do Céu Caetano. Given that it brings together contributions from different, yet complementary, subfields of linguistics, the book will appeal to a broad readership of linguists.

Regimes of Description
Regimes of Description responds to the perceptionhowever imprecisethat forms of knowledge in every sector of contemporary culture are being fundamentally reshaped by the digital revolution: music, speech, engineering diagrams, weather reports, works of visual art, even the words most of us write are now subject, as Lyotard points out in The Inhuman, to a logic of the bit, the elemental unit of electronic information. It is now possible to slice, graft, and splice this knowledge in ways never before imagined using technologies that treat vast bodies of information as a stream of data bits. Programs and technical algorithms specify the criteria for discriminating between the data stream of a Mozart string quartet and the CAT scan of a diseased organ. But are these machine instructions and design parameters descriptions, or merely mechanical filters? And if the latter, what constitutes a description of digitally encoded knowledge? As a group, the essays in this volume pose that question as a first attempt to write the archaeology of the nature and history of description in the digital age.
