Over two thousand years ago two disillusioned disciples walked along a dusty road to Emmaus. They had just witnessed Jesus their friend and leader whom they hoped to be the messiah suffer a gruesome death by crucifixion. Doubt, fear, and uncertainty clouded their conversation as they journeyed home questioning the future. Until something miraculous happened...the risen Jesus appeared and answered their questions. Today, many young Catholics step onto college campuses with numerous questions about their faith yearning to know if the seed of faith given to them as a child is both true and practical. Using the miracle on the road to Emmaus as a model, young adult ministers conversed weekly for three months with college students about the most pressing questions they had about the Catholic faith. As they journeyed together (virtually) something amazing happened... doubts disappeared, fears faded, and Jesus revealed that He is still alive. Hearts Burning Within Us is a result of that grace-infused Conversation, and we pray that as you read these pages The Holy Spirit will set your heart aflame like the disciples on the road to Emmaus.

Increasingly the middle classes expect to defer traditional roles and responsibilities of parenthood and partnership conventionally associated with ones' twenties and thirties. Independent singles are a growing demographic in contemporary western society and are considered a 'potent icon of change' within British society (Heath and Kenyon, 2001: 83)(Heath and Kenyon, 2001: 83). There has become widespread fascination with the lifestyle of this 'new-breed' of adults within the media, market research, and in academia. However, time use research has often focused on the effects of other changes in contemporary society (such as women's increased participation in the labour force and issues of wo...

Personal Life

For more than a decade, Carol Smart has been at the forefront of debates about the sociology of the family. Yet she has become frustrated by the fixation of many commentators with the supposed decline of commitment, and even the decline of the possibility of family life. In this exciting new book, she puts forward a new way of understanding families and relationships. Breaking with conventional wisdom, her book offers a fresh conceptual approach to understanding personal life, which realigns empirical research with theoretical analysis. She gives emphasis to ideas of connectedness, relationality and embeddedness, rejecting many of the assumptions found in theories of individualisation and de...

Digital Futures for Learning

Digital Futures for Learning offers a methodological and pedagogical way forward for researchers and educators who want to work imaginatively with "what’s next" in higher education and informal learning. Today’s debates around technological transformations of social, cultural and educational spaces and practices need to be informed by a more critical understanding of how visions of the future of learning are made and used, and how they come to be seen as desirable, inevitable or impossible. Integrating innovative methods, key research findings, engaging theories and creative pedagogies across multiple disciplines, this book argues for and explores speculative approaches to researching and analysing post-compulsory and informal learning futures – where we are, where we might go and how to get there.
