Exploring the works of key women writers within their cultural, artistic and socio-political contexts, this book considers changes in the perception of women in early modern China. Genomic Imprinting
Genomic imprinting is the process by which gene activity is regulated according to parent of origin. Usually, this means that either the maternally inherited or the paternally inherited allele of a gene is expressed while the opposite allele is repressed. The phenomenon is largely restricted to mammals and flowering plants and was first recognized at the level of whole genomes. Nuclear transplantation experiments carried out in mice in the late 1970s established the non-equivalence of the maternal and paternal genomes in mammals, and a similar conclusion was drawn from studies of interploidy crosses of flowering plants that extend back to at least the 1930s. Further mouse genetic studies, involving animals carrying balanced translocations (reviewed in Chapter 3), indicated that imprinted genes were likely to be widely scattered and would form a minority within the mammalian genome. The first imprinted genes were identified in the early 1990s; over forty are now known in mammals and the list continues steadily to expand.
New Itinerant Electron Models of Magnetic Materials
This book highlights a series of new itinerant electron models proposed based on the experimental results of electron spectra obtained since 1970. Although conventional magnetic ordering models were established before 1960, many problems remain to be solved. The new models in this book include an O 2p itinerant electron model for magnetic oxides, a new itinerant electron model for magnetic metals, and a Weiss electron pair model for the origin of magnetic ordering energy of magnetic metals and oxides. With these models, the book explains typical magnetic ordering phenomena including those that cannot be explained using conventional models. These new models are easier to understand than the conventional magnetic ordering models.
Dictionary of the Ben Cao Gang Mu, Volume 2
The Ben cao gang mu, compiled in the second half of the sixteenth century by a team led by the physician Li Shizhen (1518–1593) on the basis of previously published books and contemporary knowledge, is the largest encyclopedia of natural history in a long tradition of Chinese materia medica works. Its description of almost 1,900 pharmaceutically used natural and man-made substances marks the apex of the development of premodern Chinese pharmaceutical knowledge. The Ben cao gang mu dictionary offers access to this impressive work of 1,600,000 characters. This second book in a three-volume series verifies and localizes all 2,158 geographical and associated administrative names referred to in the Ben cao gang mu in connection with the origin and use of pharmaceutical substances.
