Biography of the Swiss theologian Johann Jakob Breitinger by an unidentified author, accompanied by copies of, or excerpts from Breitinger's works, including writings and speeches on political, social, and religious topics. The manuscript opens with a religious rubric (Mit Gott den Anfang, Mitel und Aussgang), the date, and the name and title of the work's subject: Her Hanss Jacob Breitinger, Diener der Kirchen zum Grossen Münster Zürich, with reference to the Grossmünster (cathedral) where Breitinger was pastor, and head prelate of the Zurich church, from 1613 until his death. The first portion of the text (p. 1-64) seems to be devoted strictly to the biography of Breitinger, beginning w...

The Cambridge History of Eighteenth-century Philosophy

This two-volume set presents a comprehensive and up-to-date history of eighteenth-century philosophy. The subject is treated systematically by topic, not by individual thinker, school, or movement, thus enabling a much more historically nuanced picture of the period to be painted.

The fascinating correspondence of the Berlin lawyer and musician Christian Gottfried Krause is an important document reflecting the trends and developments in aesthetics, music theory and music making in the Prussian capital during the reign of Frederick the Great. The Turns of Translation Studies

What s new in Translation Studies? In offering a critical assessment of recent developments in the young discipline, this book sets out to provide an answer, as seen from a European perspective today. Many new ideas actually go back well into the past, and the German Romantic Age proves to be the starting-point. The main focus lies however on the last 20 years, and, beginning with the cultural turn of the 1980s, the study traces what have turned out since then to be ground-breaking contributions (new paradigms) as against what was only a change in position on already established territory (shifting viewpoints). Topics of the 1990s include nonverbal communication, gender-based Translation Studies, stage translation, new fields of interpreting studies and the effects of new technologies and globalization (including the increasingly dominant role of English). The author s aim is to stimulate discussion and provoke further debate on the current profile and future perspectives of Translation Studies.

This is an abridged, paperback edition of Peter le Huray and James Day's invaluable anthology of writings concerned with the role of music in eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century aesthetics. This volume retains all the most important and significant items from the original hardcover edition. Over fifty writers are represented here, including such major figures as Rousseau, Kant, Schlegel, Schopenhauer and Hegel, and the useful introductions and biographical details of the original are also retained. The aesthetic literature of the period is profuse but this carefully edited volume offers a balanced selection which illuminates the ways people experienced music and how they came to an understanding in particular of the new music of their day.

Revisiting the Synod of Dordt (1618-1619)

The Synod of Dordt (1618-1619), the international assembly which ended the yearslong dispute between Arminians and Calvinists, was a defining event in the history of the Dutch Republic. This collected volume presents new facts and analyses concerning the Synod, its context, and its legacy. It includes contributions on the Synod’s international character (Genevan delegation, James Ussher), biased historiography ( John Hales and Walter alquanquall), scholasticism ( Johannes Maccovius), philosophical ramifications, and Arminian theology. New, manuscript-based details about the formation of the Canons of Dordt are presented. Other papers examine the Canons' ascendency to confessional status, intentional pastoral style, and view on the salvation of infants. Finally, its reception in the Dutch context as reflected in prints and printed works is mapped out.
