International Review of Biblical Studies, Volume 55 (2008-2009)
Formerly known by its subtitle “Internationale Zeitschriftenschau für Bibelwissenschaft und Grenzgebiete”, the International Review of Biblical Studies has served the scholarly community ever since its inception in the early 1950’s. Each annual volume includes approximately 2,000 abstracts and summaries of articles and books that deal with the Bible and related literature, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, Pseudepigrapha, Non-canonical gospels, and ancient Near Eastern writings. The abstracts – which may be in English, German, or French - are arranged thematically under headings such as e.g. “Genesis”, “Matthew”, “Greek language”, “text and textual criticism”, “exegetical methods and approaches”, “biblical theology”, “social and religious institutions”, “biblical personalities”, “history of Israel and early Judaism”, and so on. The articles and books that are abstracted and reviewed are collected annually by an international team of collaborators from over 300 of the most important periodicals and book series in the fields covered.
Genres of Mark
One of the most fundamental questions when reading and trying to understand New Testament texts is the question of genre. It is impossible to understand a text, its meaning and intention, in its proper historical setting if one does not understand its genre: As an example, interpreting a satirical text without understanding the genre would no doubt lead to grave misunderstandings. The same logic applies to texts from the New Testament, and the matter is complicated even further by the immense historical gap between the time of the genesis of the New Testament canon and now. The problem of the New Testament texts' genre(s) is therefore a vital area of scholarly discussion within international New Testament scholarship. The current volume utilizes the newest insights from current research on the New Testament to cast new light on the question of the genre of Mark's Gospel. Here, prominent international New Testament scholars discuss how we should understand the genre(s) of Mark's Gospel, thus making an important contribution to international scholarship on the Gospel of Mark as well as the Gospel genre in general.

Die prophetischen Analogiehandlungen im Alten Testament
Wie ubermittelten die alttestamentlichen Propheten Gottesbotschaften? In diesem innovativen Buch wird fur das Phanomen prophetische Handlung erstmals eine Definition und Typologie vorgelegt. Dabei werden die in der Forschung bislang gangigen Ausdrucke "Zeichenhandlung" und "Symbolhandlung" durch den Begriff "prophetische Analogiehandlung" ersetzt, denn hinter der nonverbalen Botschaftsvermittlung der alttestamentlichen Propheten steht das Prinzip der Analogie. Von den alttestamentlichen Berichten ausgehend, fragt die Autorin, was die Performance "prophetische Analogiehandlung" umfasst haben konnte, in welcher historischen Situation und vor welchem sozio-kulturellen Hintergrund sie stattgefunden haben konnte. Durch diese Studie wird deutlich: Prophetische Analogiehandlungen sind keine Verstarkung, Unterstreichung oder Erganzung einer verbalen Botschaft & sie sind die Botschaft selbst.
Writing With Scripture
Nathanael Vette proposes that the Gospel of Mark, like other narrative works in the Second Temple period, uses the Jewish scriptures as a model to compose episodes and tell a new story. Vette compares Mark's use of scripture with roughly contemporary works like Pseudo-Philo, the Genesis Apocryphon, 1 Maccabees, Judith, and the Testament of Abraham; diverse texts which, combined, support the existence of shared compositional techniques. This volume identifies five scripturalized narratives in the Gospel: Jesus' forty-day sojourn in the wilderness and call of the disciples; the feeding of the multitudes; the execution of John the Baptist; and the Crucifixion of Jesus. This fresh understanding of how the Jewish scriptures were used to compose new narratives across diverse genres in the Second Temple period holds important lessons for how scholars read the Gospel of Mark. Instead of treating scriptural allusions and echoes as keys which unlock the hidden meaning of the Gospel, Vette argues that Mark often uses the Jewish scriptures simply for their ability to tell a story.
