The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) is a pivotal piece of recent legislation, providing a route map for the use of such resources for sustainable agriculture and food security. Plant Genetic Resources and Food Security explains clearly the different interests and views at stake between all players in the global food chain. It touches upon many issues such as international food governance and policy, economic aspects of food and seed trade, conservation and sustainable use of food and agricultural biodiversity, hunger alleviation, ecological concerns, consumers' protection, fairness and equity between nations and generations, plant breeding techniques and socio-economic benefits related to food local economies. The book shows that despite the conflicting interests at stake, players managed to come to an agreement on food and agriculture for the sake of food security and hunger alleviation in the world. Published with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and with Bioversity International.

The Custodians of Biodiversity

Agricultural biodiversity is a precious legacy which we have a moral duty to pass on intact to future generations. As farming systems modernise, these crucial resources risk being lost, unless effective conservation measures are put in place and sufficient recognition is given to the role of the farmer in food security and agricultural development. This publication contains a number of black and white photographs by Pablo Balbontân Arenas, which give an insight into the life and customs of small farmers who foster, maintain and use genetic diversity in traditional agricultural systems, deploying local techniques and knowledge accumulated over many centuries, focusing on four crops: wheat, rice, maize and potato. The accompanying text is written in English, Spanish and Italian.

The IBPGR sponsored two complementary working groups on cassava; the first one in 1981 at CIAT, Cali, Colombia and the second in 1982 at IBPGR headquarters at FAO, Rome. The primary objectives of these working groups were to; review the major existing collections of cassava; advise on known genetic erosion; identify priorities for collection; advise on collection procedures; advise the IBPGR on potential depositories for international designation; advise on storage and maintenance procedures; identify any quarantine problems affecting the transfer of material; and to agree on a list of descriptors. In addition the board provided a consultancy to Dr. Patino, under the guidance of CIAT, to more clearly define areas of priority and strategies for the collection of cassava and wild Manihot spp. in their centre of diversity; his report was discussed and endorsed by the second working group.

Custodians of Biodiversity

Agricultural biodiversity is a legacy from past generations that we have a moral obligation to pass on, intact, to the next generations so that they can retain all options for dealing with the future. The photographs of Pablo Balbontín Arenas, reproduced in this book, give an idea of genetic diversity. They provide an insight into the life and customs of farmers who foster, maintain and use genetic diversity in traditional agricultural systems, deploying local techniques and knowledge accumulated over many centuries. Pablo has chosen four crops (wheat, rice, maize and potato) that together account for more than 50 percent of human calorie intake from plants, and has traveled to areas where each of these crops has been domesticated and developed over thousands of years, seeking out communities and settlements that are generally difficult to reach and therefore 'uncontaminated', in which to observe and photograph local agricultural traditions.--Publisher's description.
