The Spanish Military and Warfare from 1899 to the Civil War
This book explores the attitudes of the Spanish army officer corps towards the evolution of warfare during the early decades of the twentieth century, and their influence on the armies of the Spanish Civil War. It examines how the Spanish military coped with technological innovations such as the machine gun and the tank, how it adapted the army ́s battlefield doctrine to changes in warfare before the Civil War, and the influence of this doctrine on the outcome of the conflict. Of the different armed forces that fought in the Spanish Civil War, it is paradoxically the Spanish army that remains most forgotten - especially its military doctrine. Scholarship on the Spanish military in this period focuses on its politics, ideology and institutional reforms, touching upon 'hard' professional issues only superficially, if at all. Based on original research and using largely unstudied Spanish primary sources, this book fills a major scholarly gap in the history of the Spanish army and the Spanish Civil War.
Systemic Inflammation in Severe Infectious Diseases
Hospital-acquired infections are common and often result in life-threatening complications, mostly facing critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. Patients with hospital-acquired infections may die from bacteremia/fungal/viral infection or hyperinflammatory complications because of an uncontrolled over-activation of the innate immune system with pathological levels of circulating proinflammatory cytokines, or from multiorgan failure. In addition to eliciting a robust inflammatory response, it paradoxically renders the host in an immunocompromised state at the late stage of the disease progression. Severe infectious diseases, including sepsis and septic shock are among the most common reasons for death in hospitals. Sepsis is an infection-induced syndrome characterized by a generalized inflammatory state and represents a frequent complication in surgical patients and in immunocompromised patients. Sepsis is a common, expensive, and frequently associated with a fatal outcome. Every 3 to 4 seconds somebody dies with sepsis, and it is one of the leading causes of death worldwide.

Commutative Algebra and Its Connections to Geometry
This volume contains papers based on presentations given at the Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) on commutative algebra and its connections to geometry, which was held August 3-14, 2009, at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco in Olinda, Brazil. The main goal of the program was to detail recent developments in commutative algebra and interactions with such areas as algebraic geometry, combinatorics and computer algebra. The articles in this volume concentrate on topics central to modern commutative algebra: the homological conjectures, problems in positive and mixed characteristic, tight closure and its interaction with birational geometry, integral dependence and blowup algebras, equisingularity theory, Hilbert functions and multiplicities, combinatorial commutative algebra, Grobner bases and computational algebra.
