The Multiple Facets of Kisspeptin Activity in Biological Systems

In 1996 a cDNA called KISS1 (KI in reference to the place of discovery-Hershey Pennsylvania, home of the famous Hershey Chocolate Kisses- and SS as suppressor sequence) was identified in non-metastatic melanoma cell lines. Its 54 amino-acid product, Kisspeptin-54 (Kp-54), was originally called metastin for its ability to inhibit cancer metastasis through the activation of a G coupled receptor, previously known as GPR54 and currently renamed the Kisspeptin receptor (KISS1R). Shorter active peptides all capable of binding to KISS1R have been identified and the physiological activities of these Kisspeptins are now known to extend not only to the suppression of metastasis. Kisspeptins currently ...

Contributions of Zoos and Aquariums to the Advancement of Marine Science

As zoological organizations evolve in the twenty-first century to address the biodiversity extinction crisis, and proactively demonstrate relevance in a changing public opinion landscape, their conservation science portfolios continue to expand. Public zoos and aquariums address these issues directly by conducting both ex- and in-situ research designed to advance our understanding of species while also detecting, diagnosing, and halting population declines in the wild. In particular, the distinct nature of zoological organizations uniquely positions them to make significant contributions to marine science. The ability to care for and access a diverse suite of marine species provides the oppo...

Shifting States in Global Markets

Shifting States in Global Markets contributes to the debates over the political economy of globalization by focusing attention on the increasingly important role of subnational governments in implementing economic policies. Challenging the view that the effects of decentralization are positive or negative uniformly and can be explained by reference to the influence of national political institutions, Alfred Montero uses his comparisons of industrial policy in Brazil and Spain, and between different regions in these countries, to argue that we need to pay attention to political conditions at the subnational level to account for the variation in economic success between regions. Two crucial co...
