Constantinople and the West
The glory of the Italian Renaissance came not only from Europe's Latin heritage, but also from the rich legacy of another renaissance - the palaeologan of late Byzantium. This nexus of Byzantine and Latin cultural and ecclesiastical relations in the Renaissance and Medieval periods is the underlying theme of the diverse and far-ranging essays in Constantinople and the West.

When ISIS reared its ugly head in the last decade, God had already prepared a “vaccine” against the contagion of extremism that created it: the re-discovery of the Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Peoples of the Book, which firmly place the actions of groups like ISIS under the curse of God and His Prophet. This was largely due to the exhaustive scholarship of Dr John Andrew Morrow, leading to the publication in 2013 of The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World. Not only was this a scholarly triumph, but it also inaugurated an international, interfaith movement throughout the Muslim world known as the Covenants Initiative, which culminated in the acquittal of the Christian woman Asia Bibi on charges of blasphemy by the Pakistani Supreme Court in 2018. The book was quoted by the justices in their decision. This volume of speeches, articles and interviews is a chronicle of the first, activist phase of the Covenants Initiative, proving that socially committed scholarship is alive and well in the twenty-first century.

The book contains six sections. The first section covers general articles; then there is a section concentrating on novel systems and applications. This is followed by one that deals with a range of applications of polymers, surfactants and liquid crystals. This is followed by a section on advances in fundamental understanding. Then there is one on biological systems, and finally there is a section on micelle and vesicle systems, with particular emphasis on dynamic aspects. The contributors, including Physicists, Chemists, Biologists and Chemical Engineers, variously chose to write review-type articles, summaries of their own recent work in the field and its relevance in the general concept of self-assembly, specific short papers related to their particular presentation, or their own thoughts concerning the future development of their particular interest area. All these aspects are addressed in the book. The book covers research at the forefront of the subject, and it is expected to be a very useful addition to the literature in this important field.

The Acquisition of Books by Chetham's Library, 1655-1700
Chetham's Library, Manchester, was founded in 1655 by the bequest of the Manchester merchant, Humphrey Chetham (1580-1653). Drawing on recent debates about the methods of book history, this book is a detailed study of the way in which an early modern provincial library was created, stocked with books and administered. Using extensive archival research into the Library's acquisitions and the trade in books and ideas in the later seventeenth century, Yeo examines the motivations behind the Library's foundation, the beliefs of those responsible for the selection of books and the Library's relationship with the London bookseller Robert Littlebury. The result is a refreshing reinterpretation of provincial intellectual culture and the workings of the early modern trade in books and ideas.
Dubrovnik: A Mediterranean Urban Society, 1300–1600
This second volume of the author’s studies opens with a new survey of the recent historiography of Dubrovnik, and also contains four items specially translated from Serbo-Croat. The first part deals with aspects of daily life in this Mediterranean city, including analyses of the differing attitudes of the patricians and lower classes, and the position of the authorities with regard to homosexuals and Jews. The following articles consider Dubrovnik’s international role, on the one hand as a maritime state and in relation to Venice, and on the other in terms of its participation in the interaction of Latin and Slav cultures in Renaissance Dalmatia.
