Because of its ability to reduce tiredness, sleep deprivation and improve alertness, caffeine emerged in the twenty-first century as a miraculous specific, which allows humans to cross their normal physiological and psychological body limits. Its attractiveness comes from its natural origins and strong psycho-stimulating properties, with relatively weak side effects. Caffeine studies carry the hope to understand the associations between inherited genotype and drug action and to find highly personalized treatments for various diseases, more sophisticated drug delivery systems, safer ways of protecting plants and cheap, renewable fuels. This book consists of chapters covering caffeine history, methods of its determination and not only astonishing medicinal but also non-medicinal applications. It is our hope that every reader will find in this book something interesting, inspiring, informative and stimulating.
Landforms and Landscapes of Portugal
The book brings together contributions from over 35 Portuguese geomorphologists, presenting a thorough overview of the main highlights of the landscape of Portugal's mainland, Azores and Madeira. The book, which is a tribute to Professor António de Brum Ferreira, first President of the Portuguese Association of Geomorphologists and former Professor at the University of Lisbon, who passed away in January 2013, is organized in 3 parts: a) Introduction, which presents a general framework of the physical geography of Portugal, b) Geomorphological landscapes, presenting ca. 30 short papers with regional focus on key geomorphological areas, c) Applied geomorphology, providing an updated vision on the protection of geomorphological heritage with a focus on geoparks, as well as on Geomorphological hazards in Portugal. This first book ever to concentrate on the geomorphology of Portugal will surely become a benchmark for Portuguese geomorphology.

Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
The initial ‘idea’ for the book emerged during the seminar Sharing of Innovative Pedagogical Practices that occurred at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) in 2018. Like all ‘good ideas’, this one originated in a conversation between colleagues from the University of Coimbra and the University of West London in the United Kingdom. The ‘idea’ of this book was to move away from sharing experiences related to teaching and learning in higher education in just one or two countries, but instead to organise a more European view about the policy, research and teaching practices that are shaping the way our students learn, academics teach and do research. We have a total of 16 chapters from academics in Portugal, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, and the Czech Republic. The book is organised in four interrelated themes: (1) policy and quality; (2) professionalisation of teaching and academic development; (3) research and teaching nexus; and (4) pedagogy and practice.
