Growth, Distribution and Poverty in Africa
This publication analyses country studies into poverty dynamics over the past decade in eight African countries: Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, Mauritania, Nigeria, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Using improved household survey data, the book provides an overview of poverty trends and considers the impact of policy reforms to promote economic growth and poverty reduction. The report highlights the importance of the following factors in the success of poverty reduction strategies in Africa: country location, as some regions have failed to benefit from economic growth due to their remoteness; the role of infrastructure, such as a viable road network; access to education and land are key private endowments in helping households to benefit from emerging economic opportunities; and the significance of social protection measures for poverty outcomes.

World Bank Assistance to Agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa
Sub-Saharan Africa is a critical development priority-it has some of the world's poorest countries and during the past two decades the number of poor in the Region has doubled, to 300 million-more than 40 percent of the Region's population. Africa remains behind on most of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and is unlikely to reach them by 2015. With some of the world's poorest countries, Africa is a development priority for the donor community. A major drag on Africa's development is the underperformance of the critical agriculture sector, which has been neglected both by donors and governments over the past two decades. The sector faces a variety of constraints that are particular to agriculture in Africa and make its development a complex challenge. Poor governance and conflict in several countries further complicate matters. IEG has assessed the development effectiveness of World Bank assistance in addressing constraints to agricultural development in Africa over the period of fiscal 1991-2006.
African Agricultural Reforms
This volume analyzes the political economy of the successes and failures of the agricultural reform programs in Sub Saharan Africa. It shows that in almost all cases reforms lead to a supply response but their sustainability in face of shocks depend on the consensus about the reform and the subsequent rent distribution.
Political Power and Economic Policy
This book analyzes the links between political economics, governance structures and the distribution of political power in economic policy making. The book theoretically explains and empirically quantifies these interactions. The analysis includes both public good policies and redistributive policies. Part I of the book presents the conceptual foundations of political-economic bargaining and interest group analysis. After presenting the underlying theory, Part II of the book examines ideology, prescription and political power coefficients; Part III analyzes a number of specific structures; and Part IV presents a framework for political econometrics with a number of empirical applications and testable hypotheses. How the World Hunger Problem Was not Solved
