Evidence-based LSP
This book presents a number of different perspectives on the central theme of 'evidence' and its interpretation in the study of specialist languages and their various uses. The principal topics include text corpora, citation patterns, some challenging dichotomies, terminology and knowledge management, and specialist translation. Each topic is presented in one of five parts, each with its own introduction. The volume includes contributions from established and new researchers in the field, as well as well-known scholars from other disciplines who bring a fresh eye to LSP studies. The book presents selected papers from LSP2003, the 14th European Symposium on Language for Special Purposes held at the University of Surrey, Guildford, in co-operation with the AILA Scientific Commission on Language for Special Purposes.
The Interface between Scientific and Technical Translation Studies and Cognitive Linguistics
Scientific and Technical Translation (STT) is a highly complex and knowledge-intensive field of translation and cognitive linguistics is a usage-based linguistic framework which provides powerful theoretical tools for modelling knowledge organisation and representation in discourse. This book explores the interface between scientific and technical translation studies and cognitive linguistics by discussing the epistemological, contextual, textual and cross-linguistic dimensions of scientific and technical translation from a cognitive linguistic perspective. Particular emphasis is placed on explicitation and implicitation as indicators of the interaction between text and context in STT. The corpusbased investigation of the two phenomena illustrates the complex knowledge requirements pertaining to scientific and technical translation and demonstrates the explanatory power of cognitive linguistics with regard to important textual and contextual aspects of STT.

The 18 contributions to this volume deal with a variety of 'tropes', such as metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, irony, euphemism, antonomasia and hyperbole. Using various approaches or paradigms the authors aim to find answers to the crucial epistemological questions, namely whether and to what extent utterances containing tropes can be said to be true or false.
Translating Minorities and Conflict in Literature
Minorities and Conflict are prevailing topics in literature and translation. This volume analyses their occurrence by focussing on the key domains: censorship/manipulation, translation flows from the linguistic periphery, and reflections on self-expression. The case studies presented discuss (re)translations of authors such as Virginia Woolf and treat a wide variety of languages, such as Flemish literature in Czech or Russian translations of Estonian prose. They also treat relevant topics such as heteroglossia, de-colonialism, and self-translation. The texts in this volume were originally presented at the conference Translating Minorities and Conflict in Literature, held in June 2021. In an increasingly interconnected and complex global landscape they advocate transparency, accountability, and the preservation of linguistic diversity.

Studentische Textkompetenz im Fach Maschinenbau
Ingenieurwissenschaftler:innen arbeiten in ihren Texten häufig mit Formeln, technischen Zeichnungen und Abbildungen. Für einen effizienten Umgang mit diesen komplexen Inhalten brauchen sie hohe Textkompetenz. Ausgangspunkt der Studie ist ein theoretisch fundiertes, fachspezifisches Modell von studentischer Textkompetenz, das anhand von Interviews mit Lehrenden des Fachbereichs Maschinenbau empirisch geprüft wird. Aus den Ergebnissen entstand ein Modell mit den Teilkompetenzen "situative und materielle Bedingungen", "Querschnittskompetenzen", "allgemeine Kompetenzen" und "fachbezogenen Kompetenzen", die in Relation zueinander stehen und dynamisch, je nach Textproduktionssituation, zusammengesetzt sein können. Damit berücksichtigt das Modell verschiedene Lernstände der Studierenden und ermöglicht es kontextadäquate Texte zu produzieren, auch wenn einzelne Teilkompetenzen nicht vollständig ausgebaut sind. Die Ergebnisse tragen dazu bei, die fachwissenschaftliche Textkompetenz im Maschinenbau besser zu erfassen und Aspekte der Vermittlung zugänglich zu machen.
