Symbolism 17: Latina/o Literature
The complex nature of globalization increasingly requires a comparative approach to literature in order to understand how migration and commodity flows impact aesthetic production and expressive practices. This special issue of Symbolism: An International Journal of Critical Aesthetics explores the trans-American dimensions of Latina/o literature in a trans-Atlantic context. Examining the theoretical implications suggested by the comparison of the global North-global South dynamics of material and aesthetic exchange, this volume highlights emergent Latina/o authors, texts, and methodologies of interest in for comparative literary studies. In the essays, literary scholars address questions of the transculturation, translation, and reception of Latina/o literature in the United States and Europe. In the interviews, emergent Latina/o authors speak to the processes of creative writing in a transnational context. This volume suggests how the trans-American dialogues found in contemporary Latina/o literature elucidates trans-Atlantic critical dialogues.
Shakespeare’s Suicides
Shakespeare’s Suicides: Dead Bodies That Matter is the first study in Shakespeare criticism to examine the entirety of Shakespeare’s dramatic suicides. It addresses all plays featuring suicides and near-suicides in chronological order from Titus Andronicus to Antony and Cleopatra, thus establishing that suicide becomes increasingly pronounced as a vital means of dramatic characterisation. In particular, the book approaches suicide as a gendered phenomenon. By taking into account parameters such as onstage versus offstage deaths, suicide speeches or the explicit denial of final words, as well as settings and weapons, the study scrutinises the ways in which Shakespeare appropriates the convention of suicide and subverts traditional notions of masculine versus feminine deaths. It shows to what extent a gendered approach towards suicide opens up a more nuanced understanding of the correlation between gender and Shakespeare’s genres and how, eventually, through their dramatisation of suicide the tragedies query normative gender discourse.

Sie setzt sich mit verschiedenen Zitatbegriffen auseinander, liefert eine fur Rechtsprechungsanalysen handhabbare Definition und bespricht eine der Hauptfunktionen des Zitats: Autoritat durch Zitieren. Die Autoritat von Gerichten und die Autoritat durch Zitate werden zueinander in Beziehung gesetzt. With bans on reproductive rights and access to healthcare, with censorship in schools and universities, and the instrumentalization of rights rhetoric itself, diversity issues stand at the heart of the primary and general elections in the United States. The contributors examine how the American elections will influence diversity issues in the United States and elsewhere, considering reproductive and immigration rights, planetary justice, epistemic and physical violence against LGBTQIA+ people as well as efforts to abet this violence. In this way they highlight the symbolic and political weight of the 2024 U.S. elections as a watershed moment for citizens of the world.
