Imago and Contemplatio in the Visual Arts and Literature (1400–1700)
This volume contains twenty-four essays, which, in their subjects and methodology, pay tribute to the scholarship of Walter S. Melion. The contributions are grouped under three categories: “Devotion,” “Art and Image Theory,” and “Vision and Contemplation.” The Devotion section addresses votive practices, theological theory and polemic literature. The Art and Image Theory section focuses on Jesuit image theory, the reflexive dimension of works, and artists’ reflections on the function of images. Finally, the Vision and Contemplation section discusses the ‘early modern eye’ as a tool for thoughtful, prolonged looking to ascertain visual wit, deception, self-assessment and friendship, sacred and profane allegories.

Communes and Conflict: Urban Rebellion in Late Medieval Flanders
In Communes and Conflict, Jan Dumolyn and Jelle Haemers explore the urban rebellions that regularly erupted in Flanders between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries. They analyse not only how these rebellions were sparked and repressed, but also how they shaped the culture and identity of Flemish townspeople. Drawing from a wide range of theoretical methods and concepts, including those of discourse analysis, semiotics, speech acts, collective memory and material cultural studies, the authors return to key Marxist questions on ideology, labour and class interest to map the perspectives of the rebels, the urban patriciate and the Flemish and Burgundian nobility.

De 1895 à 1920, Landrecies s'est vue perdre ce qui faisait son identité urbaine jusqu'alors : ses fortifications. Aujourd'hui, ville ouverte sur le bocage de l'Avesnois, la cité natale de Dupleix entretient une histoire particulière avec ce passé et souffre de l'absence de vestiges conséquents encore en place. La vision passéiste de certains ouvrages, à l'unisson du fait militaire, n'a fait que négliger un autre pan de la vie urbaine à Landrecies aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles durant le temps de la fortification : son urbanisme et son architecture. De cela, à travers une approche novatrice, et alors que les villes fortes de l'Avesnois n'ont jamais été étudiées sous cet angle, on découvre une autre histoire de Landrecies, celle des aménagements plus ou moins accomplis, de la réglementation urbaine et surtout d'une architecture que l'on n'avait jamais nommée jusqu'ici, l'architecture tournaisienne.
