Rising tropospheric ozone (O3) concentrations pose a critical threat to forest ecosystems. A stomatal flux-based risk evaluation methodology at leaf level was established recently in the context of the Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution. This study demonstrates improvement and validation of the stomatal flux–effect approach for European beech and Norway spruce with results from the 8-year free-air O3 enrichment experiment at Kranzberg Forest (Germany). Based on the recommended O3/water vapour diffusivity ratio of 0.663, provisional corrected flux–effect functions for beech and spruce were deduced. Comparison of observed and modelled loss in annual growth under twice-ambient O3 exposure relative to whole-stem productivity under ambient O3 seems to confirm the Convention’s leaf-level stomatal flux approach and the associated response function for Norway spruce up to twice-ambient O3 exposure. For European beech, it must be emphasized that the Convention’s methodology may underestimate the risk for loss in whole-stem productivity.

Empirical evidence underlines enhanced ground-level O3 regimes as components of global change, although interaction responses of forest trees and ecosystems have only recently been addressed by research. One case study is the tree-level Kranzberg Forest Experiment, having been resumed for envisioning “next-generation” ecosystem-level O3 research. Quantifying enhanced O3 impact is highlighted as part of a multi-factorial, abiotic–biotic interaction network of experiments and monitoring sites, which challenge the required quantitative predictability of the plasticity, and hence, extent and risk in system response, given the significance of forests as global determinants of carbon storage and sequestration. Here, we outline such integrated research concepts, cross-linking experimentation, monitoring and modelling to scale up O3 responses from internal tree processes towards zonobiomic spatio-temporal scales. The availability of conceptual and methodological means as pre-requisites is emphasized. The relevance of respective research for providing spin-offs within socio-economic contexts related to biogenic energy production and CO2 emission trading is examined.

Anthropogenic emissions of ammonia cause a host of environmental impacts, including loss of biodiversity, soil acidification and formation of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Under the auspices of the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution, around 80 international experts met to review the state of scientific knowledge. This book reports their analysis. It concludes that threshold levels for ammonia effects have been underestimated and sets new values, it assesses the independent evidence to verify reported reductions in regional ammonia emissions, and it reviews the uncertainties in modelling ammonia, both in "hot spots" and at the regional scale.
