English in Elementary Schools
An increasing number of multilingual students, often with a migration background, are attending elementary schools in Germany these days. Also on the rise is the number of schools offering a bilingual program, where content subjects such as science and mathematics are taught in a foreign language. This book explores minority and majority language students' German and English reading and writing skills in elementary schools which offer either regular English-as-subject lessons or bilingual programs with varying degrees of English intensity. The focus is on effects of foreign language input intensity with respect to students' language background, gender, cognitive abilities, and socio-economic background. This book also provides recommendations for English reading and writing activities in the elementary school classroom.

Refusant les barrières disciplinaires, les auteurs démontrent que l'acquisition de la connaissance n'est pas affaire de chapelle ni de technologie, mais d'abord de doute et d'ouverture : le doute et la remise en question du "savoir acquis" ; l'ouverture et la tolérance à la différence. Cette cinquième édition fait l'objet d'une importante mise à jour. Certains textes, comme ceux portant sur la modélisation ou l'approche biographique, ont été récrits pour améliorer la compréhension du thème ou y intégrer les plus récentes connaissances. Deux chapitres ont été ajoutés : un portant sur la recherche organisationnelle dépeignant une réalité importante du monde de la recherche sociale qui avait été ignorée par les éditions antérieures, et une bibliographie thématique des écrits en recherche sociale publiés dans les six dernières années en français au Canada.
