Family and Farm
Family and Farm is the history of the communautes, the large patriarchal households of central France, from the close of the medieval era to the nineteenth century. These households were unique in that they often included as many as twenty members, holding property in common. Far from having roots in any cultural bias or folkloric tradition, the communautes were organized to enable individual families to meet the demands imposed by the social, economic, and physical environments in which they lived. The book examines household composition, the role of kinship, inheritance and successive strategies, and the nature of interpersonal relations. The period covered by the study includes the collapse of feudalism, the rise of the modern state, the French revolution, and the emergence of agrarian capitalism. Each crisis posed fundamental problems of survival for peasant families, and the organization of households constituted a crucial means by which that survival was ensured.
Sex and Class in Women's History
The essays collected in this volume reflect the upsurge of interest in the research and writing of feminist history in the 1970s/80s and illustrate the developments which have taken place – in the types of questions asked, the methodologies employed, and the scope and sophistication of the analytical approaches which have been adopted. Focusing on women in nineteenth-century Britain and America, this book includes work by scholars in both countries and takes its place in a long history of Anglo-American debate. The collection adopts 'the doubled vision of feminist theory', the view that it is the simultaneous operation of relations of class and of sex/gender that perpetuate both patriarchy and capitalism. Both the vigour and the urgency of scholarship infused with social aims can be clearly felt in the essays collected here.

Das Buch ist Ergebnis einer im Rahmen eines internationalen Forschungsprojektes durchgefuhrten Studie und versteht sich als Beitrag zur internationalen Debatte uber die landliche Gesellschaft im Bereich der Gutsherrschaft. Es bezieht sich auf aktuelle Forschungsdiskussionen in der Sozial- und der Agrargeschichte sowie der Historischen Anthropologie von Gutsherrschaftsgesellschaften, fur die kaum empirische Forschungen vorliegen. Die Analyse basiert auf einer Mikrostudie dreier Dorfer in Nordbohmen zwischen 1558 und 1750. Die Ergebnisse ermoglichen eine neue Einschatzung der sozialen Praxis in landlichen Gesellschaften der Fruhen Neuzeit, insbesondere im Bereich der bauerlichen Erbschaftspraxis, des Besitztransfers, der Altersversorgung sowie der Rolle und der dorflichen Gemeinde in der Gutsherrschaft. Dadurch konnen bisherige pauschalierende Vorstellungen uber die Funktionsweise der Gutsherrschaft in Bohmen und im ostlichen Mitteleuropa hinterfragt werden.
