From Construction Materials to Technical Gases

Many elements and inorganic compounds play an extraordinary role in daily life for numerous applications, e. g., construction materials, inorganic pigments, inorganic coatings, steel, glass, technical gases, energy storage and conversion materials, fertilizers, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts, photofunctional materials, semiconductors, superconductors, soft- and hard magnets, technical ceramics, hard materials, or biomedical and bioactive materials. The present book is written by experienced authors who give a comprehensive overview on the many chemical and physico-chemical aspects related to application of inorganic compounds and materials in order to introduce senior undergraduate and postgraduate students (chemists, physicists, materials scientists, engineers) into this broad field. Volume 1 covers construction materials, coatings, metals, intermetallics, technical glasses and technical gases. Vol. 2. From Energy Storage to Photofunctional Materials. Vol. 3. From Magnetic to Bioactive Materials.

Alkoxysilanes and the Consolidation of Stone

Stone is one of the oldest building materials, and its conservation ranks as one of the most challenging in the field. The use of alkoxysilanes in the conservation of stone can be traced as far back as 1861, when A. W. von Hoffman suggested their use for the deteriorating limestone on the Houses of Parliament in London. Alkoxysilane-based formulations have since become the material of choice for the consolidation of stone outdoors.^l This volume, the first to cover comprehensively alkoxysilanes in stone consolidation, synthesizes the subject's vast and extensive literature, which ranges from production of alkoxysilanes in the nineteenth century to the extensive contributions from sol-gel sci...

From Magnetic to Bioactive Materials

This work provides the broad range of applications of inorganic compounds. Due to their well defined properties they play an important role in many fields either on a large scale in our daily life or as niche products. Experts from industry and academia present the vast amount of distinguished materials focusing on their synthesis and function. Volume 2 covers e.g. electronic, magnetic, biomedical, carbon- and sulfur-based materials and ceramics.

Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Baltimore, 1820-1834

This present volume concerns the Customs Passenger Lists for the Port of Baltimore from 1820-1834. In this one book the researcher has access to the records of some 50,000 immigrants who disembarked at Baltimore during the years in question. Probably three-quarters of the arriving passengers were German and most of the remainder British or Irish. Information provided on the passengers includes age, sex, occupation, name of the country to which they belong, name of the country which they intend to inhabit, name of ship, port of embarkation, and date of arrival. In the case of German passengers, even more precise information is given--places of birth and residence and specific places of destination, for instance. Anyone interested in early 19th-century immigration records could do no better than to begin his research with this groundbreaking volume.

Nondestructive Testing of Materials and Structures

Condition assessment and characterization of materials and structures by means of nondestructive testing (NDT) methods is a priority need around the world to meet the challenges associated with the durability, maintenance, rehabilitation, retrofitting, renewal and health monitoring of new and existing infrastructures including historic monuments. Numerous NDT methods that make use of certain components of the electromagnetic and acoustic spectrum are currently in use to this effect with various levels of success and there is an intensive worldwide research effort aimed at improving the existing methods and developing new ones. The knowledge and information compiled in this book captures the ...
