Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject English - Pedagogy, Didactics, Literature Studies, grade: 2,0, Martin Luther University, course: Postcolonial English, 16 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The spread of English around the world has offered us a diverse range of varieties of English. Within the framework of Postcolonial English varieties, I have investigated the Philippine variety of English, which was a result of and emerged from its colonial background. In Braj Kachru's model of World English dialects, Philippine English belongs to what are called the 'outer circle' countries and is used in the major institutions as a legacy of colonisation. As a resul...

Hitler's Last Witness

This memoir of Hitler’s personal bodyguard presents “convincing first-person testimony of the dictator’s final desperate months, days and hours” (Huffington Post). After being seriously wounded in the 1939 Polish campaign, Rochus Misch was invited to join Hitler’s SS-bodyguard. There he served until the war’s end as Hitler’s bodyguard, courier, orderly, and, finally, as Chief of Communications. On the Berghoff terrace, he watched Eva Braun organize parties, observed Heinrich Himmler and Albert Speer, and monitored telephone conversations from Berlin to the East Prussian Headquarters on July 20, 1944—after the attempt on Hitler’s life. As the Allied forces closed in, Misch w...

Misch Kohn

Misch Kohn: Beyond the Tradition is the first comprehensive study of one of the most significant master printmakers of the modern era. Hailed as a pioneer for "breaking the shackles of conventionality," Kohn has been lauded for reinvigorating printmaking in post-war America. Now, for the first time, this book brings together work from all six decades of his artistic career. This book chronicles sixty years of Kohn's prints, from the early W. P. A. lithographs through the startlingly evocative wood engravings of the 1950s, the technical innovations with etching and serigraphy of the 1960s, and his "all media" works of the 1970s, '80s, and '90s. An essay about his life and analysis of his work is complemented by numerous illustrations and the first catalogue raisonne of the prints.

The Chelmno Death Camp

The Chelmno Death Camp

This book is a comprehensive account of the Chelmno death camp. Chelmno was not only the first Nazi death camp, it also set a horrific example in establishing gas vans as the first mass use of poison gas to kill Jews. Chris Webb and Artur Hojan cover the construction and the development of the mass murder process, as perfected by the Nazis. The story is painstakingly told from all sides, the Jewish inmates, some who survived the Holocaust, the perpetrators, the Polish Arbeitskommando, and others. A major part of this work is the Jewish Roll of Remembrance that includes the few survivors and the Jews deported from the Reich, via the Litzmannstadt ghetto, to their deaths in the gas vans. The book is richly illustrated with historical and contemporary photographs and documents.
