Tectonic Controls and Signatures in Sedimentary Successions

Tectonic Controls and Signatures in Sedimentary Successions

Stratigraphers and sedimentologists who are presently describing and interpreting the infill of sedimentary basins are generally agreed that it is difficult to disentangle the signatures of tectonic processes from those of climate and eustatic sea level change in the resultant rock succession. Until better criteria are developed to distinguish between the roles played by the major variables, it is still most useful to document and interpret basin-fill architectures where we know, from independent evidence, that one of the main controls is likely to have been a major contributor. This book contains a collection of papers describing situations where the tectonic setting is fairly well established, and it can be assumed that at least the tectonic factor has contributed to the resultant signatures.

The Role of Glia in Neurotoxicity

It is well established that glial cells represent more than mere passive cytoskeletal support elements of the central and peripheral nervous system. A reciprocal relationship exists between neurons and glia that is vital for mutual differentiation, development, and functioning of both cell types. It also has become apparent that perturbations in glial function may lead to deleterious consequences in juxtaposed neurons. It is therefore possible that neuronal damage induced by chemicals or neuropathic disease involves dissociation of glial-neuronal interactions. The Role of Glia in Neurotoxicity brings together experts in the neurosciences to provide a more complete understanding of the effect...

Seismic Facies and Sedimentary Processes of Submarine Fans and Turbidite Systems

The Frontiers in Sedimentary Geology series was established for the student, the researcher, and the applied scientist to enhance their potential to stay abreast of the most recent ideas and developments and to become familiar with certain topics in the field of sedimentary geology. This series deals with subjects that are in the forefront of both scientific and economic interests. The treatment of a subject in an individual volume, therefore, should be a combina tion of topical, regional, and interdisciplinary approaches. The interdisciplinary aspects are becoming more and more important because most studies dealing with the natural sciences cannot effectively stand alone. Although this thr...

Diamond Stars

Diamond Stars is a love story about Solly and Abby, a boy and a girl with a deep, abiding love for the game of baseball, thrown together by fate, luck and baseball cards to witness one of the signature achievements in baseball history: New York Giants pitcher Carl Hubbell striking out five future Hall-of-Famers in succession at the 1934 All-Star Game. Diamond Stars is a story about passions, perseverance and the strange, mystical role heroes play in our lives. It is also a story of baseball and the enduring hold it has on the people who play it, watch it and love it. Diamond Stars moves between two classic games, in 1934 and 1984, following Solly and Abby’s story with their future clouded by doubt and their salvation in the improbable hands of a man who lost as many games as he won. Solly is convinced of this. His job now is to convince Van Lingle Mungo.
