Remembering Mississippi's Confederates

Remembering Mississippi's Confederates is a collection of never-before-seen images which document the history of these soldiers. The Confederate States of America engaged in a battle for national survival that lasted four long and incredibly bloody years. The conflict went on for so long because thousands of rebels were willing to lay down their lives and defend their homes to the last man and last cartridge. Many of these soldiers were Mississippians--approximately 78,000 citizens of the Magnolia State can be documented as having served in the Civil War. Of this number, over 27,500 died either of disease or in combat. Remembering Mississippi's Confederates is a photographic tribute to the men who fought so gallantly for their state. Many of the images in this volume have never been published and come from the proud descendants of the soldiers themselves; others were acquired from collections spread across the United States.

Jacob Bunn

This book traces the business career of Jacob Bunn. A New Jersey-born farmer who ventured west to Illinois in the mid 19th century and had his hand in a wide variety of business enterprises, ranging from a grocery business, coal, iron, sugar beets, railroads, banks, newspapers, and timepieces, he helped make Illinois a center of innovative industry. Bunn was involved in the making of Lincoln as President, in the success of the Illinois Watch Company, and set the stage for Illinois-based companies like the Sangamo Electric Co., well-known into recent times around the world. His real legacy, according to this young scholar, is his legacy of integrity and his honorable behavior when faced with bank failure in the Panic of 1873. Read of a time when industrial pioneers were settling a frontier. Jacob Bunn's life has had a global impact. He left companies and a legacy, and should serve as a model for the contemporary business world.

Like most foreign troops stationed in China, the United States Marines' mission was to protect the American embassy and American consulates, missionaries, tourists, and other citizens in China. During the half century covered by this book, the Marines saw China as it would never again be. The Opium Wars and Boxer Rebellion gave the Europeans a certain standing, with prerogatives and privileges that were looked upon by everyone, even the Chinese, as a natural order of existence. The author discusses early military operations in north China, the early legation guards, the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, and the Marine legation guard in Peking also in 1900. It also discusses Seymour's relief column, Waller's column, the capture of the Walled City of Tien-Tsin, the siege of the legations at Peking, the relief of Peking, and the Marines' return to Peking.

Since the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit, countries have continued to take measurable steps to improve nuclear security, from requiring protections against cyber attacks to launching programs to strengthen security culture in nuclear organizations. But momentum is slowing, raising serious doubts as to whether national leaders are fulfilling their commitment to continue to make nuclear security a priority. High-level political attention to nuclear security and overcoming obstacles has largely faded, international mechanisms for fostering nuclear security action and cooperation have not managed to fill the gap created by the absence of nuclear security summits, and political disputes continue to...
