Although the phenomenon of world music as an element in new "Fusion music" is creative and challenging in its own way, there are many musics of the world which hardly can survive as "old" traditions, or may even disappeared with their cultural eco-systems before ever being documented. The obliteration of such cultures and their musical traditions is gradually being perceived as a deep loss for humankind, analogous to the loss of particular species of fauna and flora when they become extinct. The variety and diversity of the cultures of the world ensure resources and democratic plurality of tomorrow.

Der vorliegende Sammelband ist aus einem Partnerschaftsprojekt der Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg mit der Israelitischen Kultusgemeinde Bamberg hervorgegangen. Im Zusammenhang mit der Wiedererrichtung der Synagoge in Bamberg soll somit ein nachhaltiges Zeichen der kulturellen sowie interreligiösen Verbundenheit gesetzt werden. Musik, Texte, Lieder und Bilder, Profanes wie Sakrales, werden auf dialogische Weise aufeinander bezogen und zusammengeführt, um mit Ideen, Anschauungen, Interpretationen und Reflexionen Fragen zur Geschichte und Gegenwärtigkeit jüdischen Lebens und Glaubens aus dem facettenreichen Spektrum unterschiedlicher Perspektiven zu vertiefen.
