Summary of Patrick Henry Brady & Meghan Brady Smith'sDead Men Flying

Please note: This is a companion version & not the original book. Sample Book Insights: #1 I had just graduated from flight school and volunteered for Viet Nam. I hoped a combat tour would help me improve my mediocre career. The 57th Medical Detachment was the only helicopter ambulance unit in Viet Nam. #2 The third commander of the 57th was Major Charles Kelly. He was reputed to be a bit of a rascal to work with, and he was getting weary of being separated from his beloved wife Jessie and their children. #3 The first words I heard from him were, We never covered ourselves with glory today. During that morning’s operation, an American helicopter had gone down in the South China Sea. Kelly and his crew were overhead, heard the call for help, and almost beat the falling bird to the water. #4 The crew of a Dust Off mission consisted of the pilot, a co-pilot, a medic to tend the wounded, and a crew chief who owned and maintained the helicopter. The medic and crew chief also served as door gunners covering the flanks of the helicopter on approach and take off.

Dead Men Flying

Viet Nam may be the only war we ever fought, or perhaps that was ever fought, in which the heroism of the American soldier was accompanied by humanitarianism unmatched in the annals of warfare. And the humanitarianism took place during the heat of the battle. The GI fixed as he fought, he cured and educated and built in the middle of the battle. He truly cared for, and about, those people. What other Army has ever done that? Humanitarianism was America's great victory in Viet Nam. Spearheading the humanitarian efforts were the air ambulance operations, call-sign Dust Off, the most dangerous of all aviation operations, which rescued some one million souls in Viet Nam. Dead Men Flying is the s...

On Warriors’ Wings

"The book is a wonderment of research with its 37 pages of notes and 29 pages of bibliography. Napoliello supports his secondary sources with interviews with Army aviators who flew in Vietnam and with current-day members of Native American tribes." — The VVA Veteran On Warriors’ Wings traces the evolution of the Army policy to give names to major end items of equipment and specifically Native American tribal, warrior chiefs, and item to helicopters. Twelve Army helicopters saw combat in Vietnam, with eleven bearing Native American names. For each, David Napoliello’s work includes an examination of what capabilities were needed, its performance requirements, and the production of the fl...

The Problem with Everything

A NEW YORK TIMES 100 NOTABLE BOOKS OF 2019 SELECTION From “one of the most emotionally exacting, mercilessly candid, deeply funny, and intellectually rigorous writers of our time” (Cheryl Strayed, author of Wild) comes a seminal new book that reaches surprising truths about feminism, the Trump era, and the Resistance movement. You won’t be able to stop thinking about it and talking about it. In the fall of 2016, acclaimed author Meghan Daum began working on a book about the excesses of contemporary feminism. With Hillary Clinton soon to be elected, she figured even the most fiercely liberal of her friends and readers could take the criticisms in stride. But after the election, she knew...
