The Cone Sisters of Baltimore

  • Categories: Art

They were friends with Picasso and Matisse. They ran in the same circles as Gertrude and Leo Stein. They avidly purchased works by Manet, Gauguin, Cezanne, Seurat, and Degas at a time when other Americans didn't. They were two Victorian women from Baltimore buying avant-garde art in Paris, attending salons with friends, and building a collection that would initially puzzle and eventually awe the art world. Over a period of fifty years, sisters Caribel and Etta Cone amassed one of the most acclaimed collections of late-nineteenth and twentieth-century art in America. Dr. Claribel and Miss Etta were two halves of an idiosyncratic team who used the fortures of their German Jewish immigrant fami...

Industrial production is considered one of the biggest sources of pollution in the world. In 2020, Norwegian furniture manufacturer Vestre decided to prove that a different future is possible. Together with architects from the Danish Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), Vestre drew up plans for a green factory deep in the Norwegian forests: Making The Plus not only takes you through the construction process of the "world's most sustainable furniture factory," documented by renowned photographer Einar Aslaksen. It also broadens our view on how architecture, industry, nature, and the public space have to be completely intertwined moving toward a sustainable future. VESTRE is an Oslo-based urban furniture maker with offices all over the world. For more than 75 years, the family-owned company has been driven by the mission to create social and caring public meeting places for millions of people. It is committed to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

A Better Planet

A practical, bipartisan call to action from the world's leading thinkers on the environment and sustainability Sustainability has emerged as a global priority over the past several years. The 2015 Paris Agreement on climate change and the adoption of the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals through the United Nations have highlighted the need to address critical challenges such as the buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, water shortages, and air pollution. But in the United States, partisan divides, regional disputes, and deep disagreements over core principles have made it nearly impossible to chart a course toward a sustainable future. This timely new book, edited by celebrated scholar Daniel C. Esty, offers fresh thinking and forward-looking solutions from environmental thought leaders across the political spectrum. The book's forty essays cover such subjects as ecology, environmental justice, Big Data, public health, and climate change, all with an emphasis on sustainability. The book focuses on moving toward sustainability through actionable, bipartisan approaches based on rigorous analytical research.

Excavations at the Palatial Complex

The city on the Kerkenes Dağ in the high plateau of central Turkey was a new Iron Age capital, very probably Pteria. Founded in the later seventh century BC, the city was put to the torch in the mid-sixth century and then abandoned. Excavations at what we have identified as the Palatial Complex were conducted between 1999 and 2005. The stone glacis supporting the Fortified Structure at the eastern end of the complex was revealed in its entirety while the greater portion of the Monumental Entrance was uncovered. Portions of buildings within the complex were also excavated, notably one-half of the heavily burned Ashlar Building, one corner of the Audience Hall, and parts of other structures. ...
